To commemorate 20 years of business, Perdomo Cigars released the 20th Anniversary line in 2012 in Maduro and Sun Grown wrapper options. The line has since been extended to include a Connecticut Shade. Back in October, I reviewed the Maduro version (HERE) and found it to be a very good cigar for under $8.00. I am back at it to find out how the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown compares to its counterpart.

Manufactured at Tabacalera Perdomo in Nicaragua, the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown, like the Maduro, is a Nicaraguan puro utilizing tobacco grown on their own farms in Esteli, Condega, and Jalapa Valley. The wrapper is not only aged over 6 years, it is fermented for an additional 14 months in bourbon barrels. Available vitolas include: Corona Gorda (6 1/2 by 48) Robusto (5 by 56), Torpedo (6 1/2 by 54), Epicure (6 by 56), Gordo (6 by 60), Pyramid (61/2 by 60), and Churchill (7 by 56).

You can purchase the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown from our good friends at Fox Cigar.

THE FACTS

Price: $8.25
Vitola: Semi Box-Pressed Robusto
Size: 5 by 56
Wrapper: Nicaraguan Sun Grown
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Smoke Time: 1 Hour and 5 Minutes

PRE-LIGHT

Draped in a medium brown wrapper that has its fair share of veins and bumps. The flexes between my fingers as I inspect it for soft spots. The wrapper has a smooth feel and a nice oily sheen.

As I bring the cigar to my nose, I find chocolate covered cherries on the wrapper and big notes of chocolate on the foot. The chocolate and cherry, along with cedar, carry over to the dry draw that has the perfect amount of resistance.

FIRST THIRD

Once lit, the smoke production on the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown is unbelievable. Thick clouds of smoke pour of the foot and copious amounts of smoke fill my mouth with each small draw. A pepper spice is front and center followed by medium to full flavors of cedar, dirt, sweet chocolate, and yeast. The burn line is thin with only a minor wave as a white ash forms. Darker flavors of coffee and pepper are accentuated on the retro-hale as the chocolate lingers on the finish of the smoke.

MIDDLE THIRD

More savory flavors hit my palate as I transition into the second third of the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown. There is a combination of salt and pepper going on followed by dirt and chocolate. The flavors are balanced and easy on the palate and have settled into medium. While the burn is not straight, it is far from causing any concern.

FINAL THIRD

A small crack has formed near the burn line, but results in no future issue. The spice warmth has picked up, which hangs around for some time and the sweetness diminishes as the savory flavors gain even more ground. The burn is jagged, but, with so little left. a touch-up won’t be necessary. The draw seems to be a bit too free as I near the end of the cigar requiring some effort to pass a mouthful of smoke.

WRAP-UP

The Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown is another solid cigar coming out of Tabacalera Perdomo. While I noted some similarities between the Sun Grown and Maduro, they remain easily distinguishable. I found the larger ring gauge comfortable in my mouth from the semi box-pressed format and my palate took a liking to the flavors the cigar presented, but only wish the sweetness stayed around until the end. And I have no complaints with the performance. With all that said, the Maduro version has the upper hand between the two as it offers a more complex smoking experience.

To commemorate 20 years of business, Perdomo Cigars released the Perdomo 20th Anniversary at the 2012 IPCPR Trade Show in Sun Grown and Maduro wrapper options. It is hard to believe a player like Perdomo is only 25 years old now. They are a staple in most retail shops and humidors I come across. Even though I have been around longer than the company, their history in tobacco and cigars far out dates me. Reaching 20 years in any business is milestone in and of itself and should be celebrated. And I am sure that 80 years plus of knowledge went into the creation of the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Maduro that I will be reviewing today.

Manufactured at Tabacalera Perdomo in Nicaragua, the 20th Anniversary Maduro is a Nicaraguan puro utilizing tobacco grown on their own farms in Esteli, Condega, and Jalapa Valley.

For under $8.00, you can pick up the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Maduro from our good friends at Fox Cigar.

THE FACTS

Price: $7.79
Vitola: Semi Box-Pressed Robusto R556
Size: 5 by 56
Wrapper:Nicaraguan
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler:Nicaraguan
Smoke Time:

PRE-LIGHT

At first glance, the wrapper on the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Maduro appears consistent in its dark brown color. But as I look closer, I can see some mottling. But the veins and bumps remain difficult to see on the dark leaf that has some decent oils.

An aroma of vinegar and chocolate comes across from the wrapper that is somewhat pungent. The aroma from the foot is beautiful with silk chocolate and graham cracker. The draw is free with that same chocolate, rich cedar and baking spices.

FIRST THIRD

The Perdomo 20th Anniversary Maduro is underway pouring out a copious amount of smoke with its free draw. The profile starts off with earth, a brandy fruit-like flavor, black pepper and a mild sweetness. There is medium spice heat, but the black pepper flavor is full lingering on the finish, along with black coffee. As the cigar progresses, the spice picks up, especially on the retro-hale. The burn is not overly pretty with a significant wave, but the white ash is stunning.

MIDDLE THIRD

Into the second third of this Nicaraguan puro, a woodsy flavor begins to push out the earthy note. The spice is into the medium/full range and the brandy-like flavor is holding strong and bringing a lot of depth to the smoke. The wood develops into a more identifiable charred oak. The charred flavor is now sitting on the finish and the sweetness is more of a caramelized sugar.

FINAL THIRD

Before I can enter the last third, the large band has to be removed. It comes off with ease. The charred oak, brandy, and black pepper flavors are balanced and meshing well.

Wrap-Up

As I mentioned earlier, I see Perdomo cigars just about everywhere and they always seem to come with a wallet-friendly price. But somehow I rarely reach for them. I fall into the trap of “what’s new” just like the next guy. So maybe that’s why I evade them. Or maybe I figure they will be at the next shop I stop in so I better reach for something else that I know I won’t come across later. Whatever the reason, each time I smoke one, I ask myself “why don’t you smoke more Perdomo”? The Perdomo 20th Anniversary Maduro was not overly complex in terms of an evolving profile, but it was complex in the depth and specific flavors that presented themselves. The brandy-like flavor and charred oak made for a very enjoyable and a somewhat sophisticated profile. Both samples smoked for review had some major waves going on with the burn and a touch-up here and there, but not something that would stop be from smoking another one. This is a very good cigar to reach for under $8.00.

The line features three wrapper options: Ecuadorian Connecticut, Nicaraguan Sun Grown, and Nicaraguan Maduro, which were scheduled for release in July, September, and December 2014, respectively. As the name implies, the tobaccos undergo 12 years of aging with the first ten years being bale aged and the last two years being aged in charred, white oak bourbon barrels.

Pre-light

The presentation of the Perdomo Double Aged 12 Year Vintage Maduro is impressive to say the least. The gold and red on the single, large band pops against the dark brown Nicaraguan Maduro wrapper leaf. The wrapper leaf is consistent in its almost oscuro appearance and appears quite oily as the light glistens off the leaf. The veins are rather small, while the bumps are abundant. An aroma of manure and unsweetened cocoa are found on the wrapper, with just a hint of pepper.

Bringing the foot of the cigar to my nose, an earthiness and cayenne pepper greet me. A shallow cut through the neatly applied double cap reveals a draw that has a tad more resistance than preferred. If the cigar doesn’t open up, I have a lot of cap left to clip away if needed. The dry draw is straightforward in its medium flavor of rich cedar and natural tobacco sweetness.

First Third

After patiently toasting the foot of this 56 ring gauge cigar to get an even light, the Double Aged 12 Year Vintage Maduro is underway. An abundant amount of silky smooth smoke fills my mouth with each small draw. It appears that a second cut will be unnecessary. The flavors are already pushing medium/full with a pleasant amount of spice that is warming my mouth. Notes of sweet tobacco, grass, and earth make up the introductory profile of the Double Aged 12 Year Vintage. The finish contains dark flavors of black coffee and earth. The cigar is burning lopsided requiring a touch-up. About an inch in, the flavors transition with a dry pencil-shaving flavor arriving, along with more sweetness and richness.

Middle Third

The pepper is playing a more dominant role in the profile, the sweetness seems to be tied with a cocoa flavors now, and the Double Aged 12 Year Vintage is gaining in richness and strength. While not overwhelming, the strength is putting me in a relaxed state of mind. The black coffee is holding strong on the finish, accompanied by sweet tobacco and a vegetal flavor. Even with the full, rich flavors, the smoke is easy on the palate.

Final Third

The flavors continually evolve in the Double Aged Maduro. The combination of coffee and cocoa are satisfying and rich. The pencil shaving flavor has transitioned to more of an oak. Burning down to the last two inches, a toasty quality joins in. From the beginning, the ash has been dark gray and flaky. The appearance of it is deceiving as the ash is difficult to knock off even after an inch of burn.

Wrap-up

I have been on a roll of smoking fabulous cigars as of late from super-premium to budget friendly, and the Perdomo Double Aged 12 Year Vintage Maduro is another cigar to add to the growing list. Deep, satisfying, and rich flavors are showcased throughout the cigar, while easily noticeable change-ups are experienced in each third and sometime multiple times in each third. A satisfying amount of velvety smooth smoke poured out with each draw. However, a few points did get knocked off of my nonexistent scoring system due to few touch-ups needed. The Double Aged 12 Year Vintage by Perdomo Cigars is a worthy smoke. Taking price into consideration, a five-pack purchase would be my final recommendation of the Double Aged 12 Year Vintage.

Here is another installment from my recent Blind Cigar trade. Perdomo is one of those brands that, for me, has been one of the most consistent quality sticks at great prices. I always have a few Perdomo’s in my humidor. I did a review of the Perdomo Reserve 10th Anniversary Maduro not long ago. If you want to read more about the Tabacalera Perdomo, read that review at this link.
The Perdomo Patriarch line was created by Nicholas Perdomo Jr. It is in honour of his father and is made using his Patriarch’s favorite blends of tobacco coming from the valleys of Esteli, Condega, and Jalapa in Nicaragua. The line is available in both Maduro and Corojo wrappers and 6 different vitolas ranging from Robusto to Churchill. As with many of the Perdomo lines, they are all larger vitolas, no shorter than 5 inches and no smaller than a 42 ring gauge. The Patriarch packs a complex and Robusto smoke into a quality constructed cigar.

Cigar: Perdomo Patriarch Maduro
Filler: Nicaraguan
Price: $7.00
Burn Time: 1.5 hours

Construction:
•	Wrapper looks fairly bumpy
•	Some medium sized veins but doesn’t look like it will cause any problems
•	Dark chocolate brown wrapper
•	Fairly firm with a slight spring, one spot is very firm near the foot
•	Super clean triple cap, blends in amazingly well
•	Cut was even and smooth
•	Very well constructed throughout the smoke

Burn:
•	Toasting was fairly slow but nice and even
•	Burn has started off razor sharp right from initial lighting
•	At the halfway point the burn is still razor sharp, even after leaving it for a few minutes to help move a piece of furniture
•	Smoking nice and slowly for a Robusto
•	Burn was razor sharp right to the end, no complaints at all

Smoke & Ash:
•	Beautiful white ash
•	Lots of smoke from this stick
•	Resting smoke is moderate but has a strong tobacco aroma
•	Ash seems fairly strong, to flaking at all
•	Ash holding strong to almost 2 inches

Tasting Notes:
•	Wrapper has a sweet tobacco aroma with a hint of cocoa
•	Foot aroma has the same cocoa notes with a touch of raw cinnamon spice
•	Pre-light draw reveals no sweetness, getting a hay-type of flavor with a touch of cocoa and a peppery spice that’s leaving my lips tingling
•	Initial draws are fairly full bodied with a very dark cocoa flavor in the background and a strong woodsy/leathery boldness
•	Getting peppery notes from the draws after about a half-inch
•	Retrohale is also fairly full bodied with a moderate spicy kick, smooth finish
•	Approaching the half-way mark and getting a nice toasted wood flavor in the mix
•	The body seems to have settled down a bit now to a smooth medium and the peppery notes have fallen off a bit, enjoying it much more now
•	The retrohale still has a big spicy bite to it but now has some more woodsy flavors to it
•	Flavors stayed pretty consistent after the halfway point to the end, just a tiny bit of bitterness but nothing unbearable

Final Thoughts:
I was expecting a milder smoke when I lit this up since it’s nice dark wrapper screamed sweet and smooth. I was surprised to find the spice and body that this stick offered along with an interesting blend of flavors. Before this smoke, I had only previously tried he Patriarch with to Corojo wrapper. I found this one to be much more flavorful even though it didn’t have many dimensions or complexity to it. I would definitely buy some of these again as they make a good full-bodied smoke that aren’t over powering. The average price online was around $7.00 which makes it well priced for a well constructed stick. Even though the Perdomo company has reduced their prices, their quality has continued to be top notch!

Pairings:
The Young’s Double Chocolate Stout was a bit of a poor pairing with this cigar. As mentioned, I was expecting a milder cigar with lots of Maduro notes. The Youngs was a bit more of a sweet stout and didn’t pair too well. This cigar would have paired well with a good stiff drink, along the lines of a scotch or bourbon. Something that has a bit of sweetness but enough strength to cleanse the palate. A strong Cuban coffee would also make a good pairing here.

If you haven’t heard yet, Nick Perdomo recently made an announcement about lowering the prices of 3 great blends by the Tabacalera Perdomo. You can read more official announcement on the Perdomo Bulletin Board. At about the same time last year, Nick announced a similar price drop in some of the cigars. Included in that price drop was the Reserve 10th Anniversary line of cigars. In light of this wonderful news, we figured what better way to spread the word than to review a Perdomo Cigar.

Perdomo Reserve 10th Anniversary Maduro

Today’s review is on the Tabacalera Perdomo Reserve 10th Anniversary Maduro. The Reserve 10th Anniversary line was first released in 2008 to mark 10 years in business of the Tabacalera Perdomo. Originally, this line was available in the Maduro and Cuban Criollo wrapper and a Champagne (Connecticut) wrapper was added to the line later. The Anniversary line was also aimed to celebrate the great success of the La Tradicion Perdomo Reserve line, and I have to say it has certainly lived up to its predecessor. The Maduro is available 5 sizes, Figurado (5.75 x 56), Robusto (5 x 54), Epicure (6 x 54), Churchill (7 x 54), and Torpedo (7 x 54). As with all figurado’s, the 56 ring gauge is in the center of the cigar and tapers to be a smaller ring gauge at each end of the cigar. I enjoyed this cigar as a mid-day smoke on a weekend with wonderful weather.

Cigar: Tabacalera Perdomo Reserve 10th Anniversary Maduro
Drink: Diet Dr. Pepper
Vitola: Figurado (5.75 x 56)
Wrapper: Nicaraguan Maduro
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Price: $4.50 – $6.00
Burn Time: 1.75 hours

Construction:
• Clean and even throughout with no large veins
• Very clean triple cap
• Medium-Dark brown in color
• Very firm throughout with only minor springiness
• Tightly packed foot
• Wrapper had a delicious oiliness to it
• Draw was perfect throughout

Perdomo Reserve 10th Anniversary Maduro

Burn:
• Toasting went well, some unlit spots were fixed by a bit of blowing on the foot
• Burn was razor sharp right off the start
• Effortlessly staying lit, taking my time and enjoying the weather and the cigar
• Wrapper stopped burning around half-way because I stepped away and left it too long, a tiny touch up fixed it and back to razor sharp burn, great recovery
• Super slow burn for a cigar this size, allowed me to enjoy it slowly

Smoke & Ash:
• Big mouthful of smoke for each draw
• Lots of resting smoke that smells wonderful
• Ash is light grey in color
• Ash if holding on past an inch
• A little flaking but nothing major, still fairly strong

Perdomo Reserve 10th Anniversary Maduro

Tasting Notes:
• Wrapper aroma is of sweet tobacco
• Aroma on the foot is sweet and has hints of coffee
• Pre-light draw still has hints of coffee and some spice on the lips
• Initials draws have a burst of cocoa and coffee flavors
• A tiny bit of spice on retrohale, but a smooth cocoa finish
• After the first few draws the flavors toned down a bit and the cocoa disappeared, enjoying just a coffee flavor and some sweet tobacco
• Body started off fairly mild and is in the medium range at the half-way point
• Cocoa flavors came back just slightly past the halfway mark
• Very mild bitterness near the end
• Final flavors left me with sweet tobacco, cocoa and some hints of leather

Perdomo Reserve 10th Anniversary Maduro

Final Thoughts:
I’ve enjoyed a fair share of this wonderful cigar and I think this particular vitola doesn’t do the blend justice. The robusto I had of the same blend was much more enjoyable and had no burn issues at all. The Champagne is also an excellent choice. One thing that has never failed me with these cigars is their consistent burn and construction. They are dead on with every cigar and I never have to pay any extra attention, I get to enjoy them effortlessly. I would definitely recommend this cigar to anyone, it would even work well as a cigar to gift a new cigar smoker. For those that smoke a few sticks per day, this one would work well as a morning or afternoon cigar and can easily be enjoyed in the evenings as well.

Pairings:
I enjoyed this cigar with Diet Dr. Pepper and thought this was an ok mid-day pairing. This cigar would pair wonderfully with a great cup of coffee, or my personal favorite, an Americano. For an alcoholic pairing, a great dark beer or a cask beer would pair great. A suggestion reviewed on this site would be the Mill Street Brewery Coffee Porter or something similar.
