Manufactured at Ernesto Perez-Carrillo’s La Alianza Factory, the Original Rebel line contains two distinct blends: Rebellious and Maverick. Rebellious, the maduro version, features a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, Ecuadorian binder, and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos. Maverick, the original version, is blended with an Ecuadorian wrapper and Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos. Both options come in three sizes: 52 (5 1/2 by 52), 54 (6 1/2 by 54), and 56 (7 1/2 by 56).

THE FACTS

Price: $10.50
Vitola: Maverick 54
Size: 6 1/2 by 54
Wrapper: Ecuadorian
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Smoke Time:

PRE-LIGHT

The EP Carrillo Original Rebel Maverick is dressed in a dark brown, Ecuadorian wrapper that is full of oils, veins, and bumps. As I run my fingers down the oily leaf, I find no soft spots and the cigar gives only slightly.

The wrapper aroma is a pungent vinegar. The closed foot shows off a bit of sweetness and chocolate, as well as the same pungency. The pig-tailed cap cuts with ease, showing off a perfect draw, even with the closed foot, as big flavors of potpourri, vanilla, and cedar awaken my palate. There is some residual heat in the mouth.

FIRST THIRD

Once lit, the E.P. Carrillo Original Rebel Maverick 54 produces a copious amount of smoke that has a thick texture in the mouth. Full flavors of earth, pencil shavings, and dark red fruit are first to make an appearance. There is a medium pepper spice in the mouth and a hair fuller through the nose as I retro-hale the smoke. A layered, salt and pepper ash is forming that is somewhat flaky in appearance.

MIDDLE THIRD

As I make my way into the second third of this 6 1/2 by 54 smoke, the pepper flavor and heat have intensified as the rest of the flavors remain level with the prior third. The fruit flavor has exited as a faint sweetness joins in. It is enough to balance out the darker earth and pepper. A quick hit with lighter is required to get the burn back in line as I near the middle of the Original Rebel Maverick.

FINAL THIRD

Into the last leg of the Original Rebel Maverick, the pencil shaving flavor has evolved to charred wood, while the earth and sweetness remain. The cigar has burned along with no further issue and I am finally beginning to feel a little nicotine kick as I close out the cigar.

WRAP-UP

The E.P. Carrillo Original Rebel Maverick 54 brings fulls flavors and medium/full strength to table. Even though the flavors are on the darker and heavier end, they are in no way harsh or unbalanced. The sweetness in the second third was a great addition to the profile and the spice held strong throughout. Other than the minor burn hiccup in the middle third, I have no complaints about the performance. Good smoke production, decent holding ash, and perfect draw. Coming in above $10 pushes the Original Rebel Maverick outside of my day to day price range, but I will be reaching for this smoke the next time I come across it in a humidor.

Seven years have passed since Crowned Heads released Four Kicks, the company’s freshman release. It is the cigar that validated Crowned Heads in the industry. Jon Huber and Mike Conder have kept the momentum going since their first release, but Four Kicks is the cigar, I believe, that encapsulates the spirit of the company and its people.

In 2017, the Four Kicks Maduro was added to the line and showcased at the IPCPR Trade Show. The Ecuadorian Habano wrapper found on the original is exchanged for a Connecticut Habano leaf. The Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos remain the same as the original blend. The Four Kicks line is manufactured at Tabacalera La Alianza S.A. Factory in the Dominican Republic in five vitolas: Corona Gorda (5 5/8 by 46), Robusto (5 by 50), Sublime (6 by 54), Robusto Extra (5 1/2 by 56), and Lancero LE 2018 (7 1/2 by 38). Prices range from $8.95 to $10.65

THE FACTS

Price: $9.60
Vitola: Robusto
Size: 5 by 50
Smoke Time: 1 Hour and 20 Minutes

PRE-LIGHT

The Four Kicks Maduro is dressed in a dark, marbled Connecticut Habano wrapper with some significant color variations. A heavy amount of oils coat the bumpy and toothy leaf. The cigar is firmly rolled but, near the foot of the cigar, there is a small indention or void in the tobaccos.

As I bring the cigar to my nose, there is straight up pungent, barnyard aroma. A more welcoming aroma is found on the foot with some cedar, chocolate, and pepper. Upon cutting the cap, a perfect draw opens up allowing cold draw flavors of cedar, cherry, and potpourri spices to move freely across my palate.

FIRST THIRD

The Four Kicks Maduro opens with full flavors that kick my senses into high gear. The flavors are balanced and the smoke is smooth in the mouth. Dark flavors of earth and coffee are accompanied by a healthy dose of pepper and a light cola sweetness. As I progress through the first third, the sweetness gradually picks up. The Four Kicks Maduro is burning along with a minor wave as a salt and pepper ash forms.

MIDDLE THIRD

As I enter the second third, I perform a quick touch-up. The intensity of the flavors has settled, but I am already feeling some strength from this 5 by 50 cigar. The earth and cola flavor continue while cocoa and coffee linger on the finish. The sweetness is really pulling through on the finish of the smoke.

FINAL THIRD

The sweetness has exited the profile while the earth holds strong and a charred wood flavor is now appearing. The charred wood flavor dominates on the retro-hale in the last third as a minor wavy burn closes out the cigar.

WRAP-UP

Several months ago, I lit up the Four Kicks Maduro with my close friend and former boss. As soon as the smoke started flowing, I knew this cigar was something special and one I had to review. Full flavors, medium/full strength and a hefty amount of spice are masterfully matched up with balance and smoothness. Other than a single touch-up, I have no complaints on the performance. The price of $9.60 is a little more than I prefer to spend on a regular smoke, but the Four Kicks Maduro is one that is worth it.

I apologize for my absence as of late. Life has been coming at me way too fast, but I am finally able to light up a cigar this Saturday morning for review. A few weeks back, Tony reviewed the E.P. Carrillo Dusk Solidos that “just didn’t do it for [him]”. Well, I thought I would try out a smaller format and see if it brings something a little better to the table.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-18315" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.casasfumando.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/EP-Carrillo-Dusk-9.jpg?resize=575%2C868" alt="E.P.
Released in 2016, the E.P. Carrillo Dusk is manufactured at Ernesto Perez-Carrillo’s Tabacalera La Alianza factory in the Dominican Republic. The cigar features a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper over an Ecuadorian binder and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos. Available sizes include Robusto (5 by 50), Stout Toro (6 by 52), Obscure (7 by 54), and the Solidos (6 by 60).

THE FACTS

Price: $7.15
Vitola: Robusto
Size: 5 by 50
Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf
Binder: Ecuadorian
Filler: Nicaraguan
Smoke Time: 1 Hour

PRE-LIGHT

The Dusk by EP Carrillo is dressed in an extremely dark brown, Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. As you look closely at the leaf, there are some even darker veins that are small in size. Oils, scatter bumps, and a fine tooth can be seen and felt. The cigar is very firm from head to foot.

A pungent aroma of vinegar, barnyard, and chocolate comes across on the wrapper. Big notes of chocolate and graham cracker are found on the foot of the cigar. After two cuts, the draw is still on the firm side. There is a mixture of chocolate and chili powder going on in the cold draw.

FIRST THIRD

The Dusk opens with a mild to medium flavor profile with notes of wood, earth, cocoa, and a pepper spice. The cocoa and pepper stand out on the finish of the smoke. At a half inch, a sweetness and bread flavor join in and are giving the other flavors a run for the money. The Dusk is burning beautifully with a light gray, layered ash forming.

MIDDLE THIRD

Even though the draw feels firm, a satisfying amount smoke is produced by the E.P. Carrillo Dusk. There is a fizzy quality to the smoke, like cola. Not in flavor, but texture. The cocoa, bread, and sweetness hold strong as coffee replaces the wood and earth. The sweetness is central in the profile.

FINAL THIRD

The sweetness, more syrupy now, continues to build and the flavors are between medium and full. The bread takes on a more toasted flavor. The coffee and cocoa remain, but more on the finish of the smoke I feel some spice heat in the mouth, but as I move it through my nose I am surprised by how tame the spice is.

WRAP-UP

Like Tony, the cigar started off a little too mild for my taste. However, the Dusk evolved quickly, bringing medium to full flavors to the table. Once the sweetness entered in, I was hooked. I have been impressed lately with the construction of E.P. Carrillo cigars. Similar to the La Historia I smoked last month, the Dusk had an excellent burn. And the price is right in the sweet spot for me at $7.15. Comparing my experience to Tony’s, it goes to show you how different sizes of the same cigar can result in completely different experiences.

A vinegar aroma comes across as I bring the wrapper to my nose. The foot of the cigar is much more pleasant with graham cracker and chocolate. Upon cutting the triple cap, I find a stiff draw with some cinnamon, graham cracker, rich cedar. The cinnamon spice warms my palate and lips.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-18241" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.casasfumando.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/EP-Carrillo-La-Historia-5.jpg?resize=575%2C380" alt="E.P.
FIRST THIRD

The snug foot band frayed the Mexican San Andres wrapper during removal. The damage is minor and I do not foresee it impacting the cigar. The introductory flavors are rather tame on the La Historia. There is charred wood, black tea, a faint honey sweetness, and pepper. There is also a lemon zest. The cigar is burning well as a salt and pepper ash holds to an inch.

MIDDLE THIRD

The lemon zest has evolved into a floral quality as I move into the second third of the La Historia. The charred wood and black tea remain, and the sweetness is only appearing every so often. The burn remains excellent. A heavy black coffee flavor lingers on the finish that is somewhat bitter.

FINAL THIRD

The final third shows another dimension of the La Historia. The charred wood and tea have backed off and a bread-like flavor has joined in. The sweetness is more constant than earlier and rounding out the profile.

WRAP-UP

The La Historia Dona Elena by E.P. Carrillo was a constantly evolving cigar that began in the mild to medium range and steadily picked up through each third. The light flavors in the first third were somewhat disappointing, but, as I burned my way through it and the flavors increased, my enjoyment of the cigar increased too. It was really the final third of the cigar that won me over with the bigger flavors and the sweetness that balanced everything out. The La Historia is an excellent performing cigar with its even burn and well-holding ash. For a cigar right under $11, it is not something I will be smoking everyday, but a cigar I wouldn’t mind grabbing a couple more of next time I stumble across it.

-Tony

Hey, here I am! My apologies to Tony and Jeremy for my extended absence due to a number of reasons, not the least of which is the longest stretch of crappy outdoor smoking weather that I can remember in these parts. There seems to be little let-up in the foreseeable future, too, so while we actually have a short sunny break, I’m going to get in a review that I have been meaning to do for about five months.

Last year Cigar Federation teamed up with Crowned Heads to produce a limited edition cigar to celebrate the birthday of the daughter of Cigar Federation’s owner Logan Lawler. Production was carried out by Ernesto Perez-Carrillo’s Tabacalera La Alianza S.A. factory. Only 200 boxes of 10 cigars were made in a single 6 x 52 size, and sold through the Cigar Federation store. Predictably, they quickly sold out, but fortunately for me, my good friend Chris Tivnan, aka Louisville Chris, was one of the ones who got in on them and sent me a couple. Big thanks to Chris for giving me the chance to try them out!

The Basics:

Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Size: 6 x 52
Price: $8.00; $79.99 per box of 10 (sold out)
Smoking time: One hour, thirty minutes
Pairing: Firestone Walker Lil Opal Barrel-Aged Saison Farmhouse Ale (ABV 6.1%)

Pre-light:

The presentation of the 729 Calloway Ln. couldn’t be much simpler without being completely naked. A single band of green ribbon on the foot is all there is, and that’s fine by me. The cigar itself is wrapped in a medium brown leaf that shows a few small to medium veins, a bit of tooth, and a slightly lumpy roll. The pack is very firm, with the exception of a soft spot near the cap. Sniffing the wrapper brings forth not much more than a bit of earthy tobacco, while the foot shows more of the same with an added mustiness. A slightly snug draw reveals cedar and sweet spices.

First third:

The first draws of the 729 Calloway Ln. show natural tobacco, sweet cedar, light spice, and pepper. A nice medium pepper is prominent on the retrohale, but soon fades back. The draw has opened up to a perfect level of resistance for me, as floral notes move in. What started out as a rather thick burn line is thinning out as the Calloway burns mostly even, leaving behind a compact medium gray ash that hangs on for over an inch. Near the close of the opening third, the pepper makes a strong return on the retrohale.

Second third:

The middle section of the Calloway brings in vague fruitiness as the wood has receded along with the pepper, leaving an oily mouthfeel. Sweet, tart citrus joins in, nicely complementing the natural tobacco, floral and spice elements, and what’s left of the cedar. The burn had wandered a bit, but has almost completely self-corrected.

Final third:

The sweetness level has dropped down and some earthiness has crept in. While a certain amount of brightness remains in the flavors, they have definitely taken a turn toward the darker (though not evil) side. The earthiness climbs in small increments while being balanced by the now semi-sweet spice notes. The 729 Calloway Ln. smokes absolutely cool down to the nub, leaving just a slight nicotine hit, and that previously mentioned depression near the cap even made for a handy thumb-rest.

Final thoughts:

I really enjoyed the heck out of the two Calloway Ln. sticks that I smoked for this review, so if you’re one of the people who jumped on it when it was available, you are lucky (or smart). The flavors of the cigar mixed very nicely with each other and showed a decent amount of complexity, while construction and burn were excellent, with nary a thought given to touch-ups or re-lights. I wouldn’t hang on to them for too long, though, because I’m not certain that those sweet spice and fruit notes will last under extended aging. I regret not getting on these, but truly am grateful that I did get a chance to try them out. The 729 Calloway Ln. is indeed a very nice tribute from Mr. Lawler to his daughter.

Pairing:

Lil Opal by Firestone Walker is a blend of French and American barrel-aged saisons that have been put through a second barrel fermentation. I would like to tell you more about it, but this is one of those beers that is normally out of my reach price-wise, and only came to me as part of a generous Christmas package from my brother. Man, I feel like a real weasel having been gifted both the cigar and beer for this review! Anyway, despite not knowing exactly how the beer tastes, after smoking the first Calloway Ln., I felt comfortable matching it up with the Lil Opal, and it turns out I was right. This beer has a light, bright mouthfeel with a tart and sour hit. Flavors of apple and lemon with just a bit of funk, lead to a long finish, making for a great match for the 729 Calloway Ln. Those elements helped to bring out more of the sweetness, spice and fruit that the cigar carries, and balanced things out beautifully. A Belgian pale ale or a fruity Weissbier would also be a great pairing.

Back in October, Tony and I had opportunity to sit down with Wes Thornton of Crowned Heads at Fox Cigar Bar’s Foxtoberfest. He was kind enough to gift both of us a J.D. Howard Reserve, which we immediately lit up. At the time, it was only my second experience with the cigar. I thoroughly enjoyed the cigar but I wanted to make sure it wasn’t just because we were smoking with a representative of Crowned Heads. Since, I have revisited the cigar several times and each time I am wowed by it. On top of the J.D. Howard Reserve, Wes Thornton provided the Casas Fumando crew a box of their 6 Shooter Sampler. Today, I will be checking out the J.D. Howard that came in the sampler.

The sampler contains two cigars from each of their regular production lines – Four Kicks, Headley Grange, and J.D. Howard Reserve. I love the presentation of the sampler and, for under $50, it is a great introduction to Crowned Head’s portfolio.

The J.D. Howard Reserve was released at this year’s IPCPR Trade Show and it is the company’s fourth release since 2011. Tony has reviewed the other offerings from Crowned Heads, which can be found below.

The Facts

Price: $8 – 9
Vitola: HR46
Size: 6 by 46
Wrapper: Brazilian Arapiraca
Binder: Ecuadorian Sumatra
Filler: Nicaraguan
Drink: Water
Smoke Time: 1 Hour and 15 Minutes

Pre-light

The J.D. Howard wears a dark brown Brazilian Arapiraca wrapper that has a deep red hue with almost no oils visible to the eye. There are veins scattered down the bumpy leaf that has a very fine tooth, making this one rustic looking cigar. The J.D.H. is by no means the prettiest cigar I have ever seen, but, like I said in last week’s post, I love seeing the natural character of a leaf. Right above the band there is a minor crack on the wrapper. The wrapper is pungent with vinegar and manure aromas.

The fully packed foot has a rich chocolate aroma. The triple cap has been applied cleanly. Taking a shallow clip, I find a firm draw making a second cut necessary. Cutting a bit deeper, the draw is still firm but much more workable. The cold draw causes a slight spice tingle at the back of my throat and I note cinnamon, cedar, and rich chocolate flavors.

First Third

Upon lighting this 46 ring gauge cigar, I am immediately met with a blast of pepper that quickly subdues. The smoke feels thick with deep notes of red wine, oak, and cocoa when it first hits my palate. The finish shifts to a dry cedar, pencil shaving-like flavor. The dry cedar flavor is the flavor I most commonly associate with Brazilian tobacco. The intensity of the spice increases and decreases from one puff to the next. The pepper notes are on the brighter side, closer to a white pepper. The burn line is thick but right on, producing a layered salt and pepper ash. There is a richness to the smoke that I can’t put my finger on.

Middle Third

The draw remains firm as I burn my way into the second third, however, a decent amount of smoke is still being produced and I do not feel like I am missing out on any flavors. There is such depth to the flavors that I am having a hard time pinpointing all of the subtleties. The retrohale really shows off the pepper and I think I feel a sneeze coming on. A rich cinnamon and a bit of sweetness have entered the mix and the cedar remains at the core of the profile. The ash and burn are still exceptional. At the halfway point of the cigar, I am beginning to feel a slight nicotine kick.

Final Third

The cocoa is developing into a sweeter, milk chocolate flavor that is similar to the silk chocolate pie at Village Inn. Additionally, some yeast or dough-like notes are bouncing in and out of the profile. I am finally coming to the small crack in the wrapper and, as far as I can tell, it did nothing to damper the experience. The woodsy notes can still be found but it is not the dry cedar from earlier. The woodsy notes are now creamier and richer. Down at the final inch and a half, a mineral flavor has arrived. The burn-line is still right on as I put the cigar down the final time.

Wrap-up

Since Crowned Heads first released Four Kicks in 2011, I have been a huge fan of the company and their cigars. I have a lot of respect for the way Jon Huber and Mike Conder run the company with a focus on honesty and integrity. But at the end of the day, no matter how much I like or dislike a company it comes down to the product they put on the market. So it is a good thing this cigar delivered in all areas. The J.D. Howard Reserve offered a complex profile with a core of cedar and spice and several variations within the more subtle notes. The burn-line was even for the entire one hour and fifteen minutes producing a solid ash. The J.D.H. an exceptional cigar that I will be keeping a steady supply of in my humidor.

Mid 90’s all week! It feels like summer! Perfect time for some backyard cigar time. This week, thanks to our good friend Sean on Facebook we are bringing you EP Carrillo’s previous Short Run release, in an exclusive size. The No. 4 Corona.

Store exclusive sizes and blended have been all the rage lately. Ernesto Perez-Carrillo teamed up with the New Hampshire tobacco chain, Federal Cigars to bring you the exclusive size to the vastly popular 2010 Short Run blend (Read our review of the 2010 short run here). Blended at the Tabacalera La Alianza S.A. in the Dominican Republic, the 2010 Short Run features an Ecuadorian Sumatran wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, and Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers. The No. 4 comes in boxes of 20 and will run you about $110. Very attractive pricing. For the record, the 2010 Short run came in 3 other sizes: Populares (4 7/8 x 50), Delirios (5 7/8 x 52), and the Doninantes (6 1/4 x 60). These are pretty hard to find, now the new Short Run New Wave Connecticut has been released (Read our review here). But if you are lucky you can still land a few.

Size: 5 1/8 x 42 – Wrapper: Ecuadorian Sumatra – Binder: Nicaraguan – Filler: Dominican/Nicaraguan

The EP Carrillo Short Run No.4 is a brilliant looking cigar. The aged, rustic looking wrapper boasts of silk and oil reflecting from it’s light brown and splotchy dark brown composition. I love this size. The wrapper feels mildly delicate, with the only soft spot being on the foot of the cigar. There are only a few, very small veins running throughout the body of the cigar, up to the nubby, round, triple cap. The EP Carrillo Short Run No.4 Federal Cigar Exclusive carries the same black band as the 2010 Short Run as well as the classic yellow, red, brown, white and black EP Carrillo Band.

The wrapper of the cigar gives off a whole ton of tobacco and cedar aroma while the foot of the cigar carries a really sweet, cedar and spice mixture. The cap cut very clean and very easy using my Palio Double Bladed cutter. The cold draw produced this crazy bready, oaty flavor with hints of tobacco and spice. It seriously tasted like tobacco flavored cereal.

First Smoke: The EP Carrillo Short Run No.4 started out with some very pleasant spice and pepper along with lots of cedar, hints of graham, citrus, and sweet, sweet tobacco. The cigar doesn’t give off too much stationary smoke, but it smells almost identical to the flavor make-up described above. Each little puff kicks out just a ton of thick, white smoke. The burnline is slightly wavy and razor sharp. The ash left behind is bright white and every flaky. It held on for about ¾ of a inch before giving way.

Halfway There: I don’t know if it’s from the wrapper and I am just now tasting it due to the smaller ring gauge, but this EP Carrillo Short Run No.4 is crazy sweet! Sweet as in, flavor, not “Dude, Sweet!”. I know I didn’t pick up this much sweetness in the other short run vitolas, although I wish I would have. It really sets the stage for the cedar and strong citrus/zest that the Short Run No.4 has to offer. There is also a bit of bittersweet chocolate sneaking in there, but it might just be the aftertaste on the beer I paired this cigar with. The burnline is still slightly wavy, but I haven’t had to touch it up at all yet. I am feeling absolutely no nicotine from this cigar yet.

Finish: All in all this EP Carrillo Short Run No.4 took only about an hour to take down. The flavors in the last third of this cigar really took off. The cigar is pumping gout massive sweet tobacco flavors, tons of cedar, still lots of orange and lemon flavors, hints of chocolate, and a really subtle pepper. The body has remained pretty solid and mild/medium throughout, prompting no real nicotine kick. The burnline has finally completely corrected itself and is burning solid with no touch ups or relights. There is absolutely no harshness, even though it’s a smaller gauge, all the way down to the tiny little nub. There was some slight heat as I neared the final inch of the cigar, but that’s to be expected. I just couldn’t put this cigar down.

Overview: Is it obvious enough that I really enjoyed this cigar? Hell, I’ve enjoyed just about every EP Carrillo has kicked out since his departure from La Gloria Cubana. The 2010 Short Run, and especially the No. 4 are up on top of that list. This is by far, the best vitola in the line, and really wish he would extend this size to all of the lines. You really start to appreciate the complex flavors of the wrapper that you just don’t get off the larger Ring Gauged versions. I love corona sized cigars for this reason. Again, this is an affordable, complex, and incredibly enjoyable cigar that fits right in with anyone’s regular rotation no matter how long you have been smoking.

Pairing: Pairing up with this EP Carrillo Short Run No.4 was a bit tricky. Based on the blend make-up alone, I normally would spring for an IPA or nice, heavy ale. But I knew that this was a more complex cigar, and with that I paired it with a far more complex beer. Sierra Nevada’s Bigfoot Barelywine is an annual release that I never skip out on chasing down. This 9.6% ABV powerhouse is brewed domestically at the Sierra Nevada Brewery in California. The beer isn’t for the faint of heart. It starts out with some heavy hoppyness witch quickly transforms to a strong alcohol, malty, floral arrangement. This cigar will quickly capture anyone’s attention. The floral and malty flavors went perfect with the citrus and cedar that this cigar kicked out. However, I can honestly say that the best pairing I have had with this cigar is sweet tea. Pure awesomeness.
