Less than a month ago, House of Emilio made known through a Facebook post the retirement of Gary Griffith, the founder of House of Emilio and Emilio Cigars. While I am sure there is a lot of speculation on the real reason for his departure, all I know is it appeared to be rather sudden. But no matter what the reason, the Casas Fumando crew wishes Gary Griffith the very best in his next pursuit. For myself, Gary’s departure makes me wonder the longevity of Emilio Cigars, and, especially, the cigars that were near and dear to Gary in the branding such as the Mia Dora, which I will be reviewing today, and the La Musa Melete.

Way back in 2013, Emilio Cigars announced the Mia Dora, a cigar dedicated to Gary Griffith’s now wife, Dora, and her ancestry. Originally scheduled for release at the 2013 IPCPR Trade Show, the cigar did not begin shipping to retailers until October 2014 as reported by half wheel. As is the case with several offering from Emilio Cigars, the Mia Dora is produced in Esteli, Nicaragua at the A.J. Fernandez factory in three vitolas: Coronita (5 ¼ by 44), Robusto (5 by 50), and Toro (6 by 50). The Robusto and Toro are packaged in 21 count boxes, while the Coronita is sold in 40 count boxes.

The Facts

Samples Provided by House of Emilio
Price: Unknown
Vitola: Robusto
Size: 5 by 50
Wrapper: Habano Rosado
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Smoke Time: 1 Hour and 15 Minutes
Drink: Water

Pre-light

The Habano Rosado wrapper is light to medium brown with a rustic appearance, small and medium veins, and some darker color imperfections. There is a mild aroma of cardboard, a very faint pungency, and cedar found on the wrapper. The same cardboard is found on the foot of the cigar, accompanied by the smell of grass after it rains and cedar.

The Mia Dora Robusto comes to a close with a beautifully applied double cap. After a quick, shallow cut, I find more of the cardboard and deep notes of wet cedar. A spice tingle is already felt on my tongue from the dry draw.

First Third

The Mia Dora is opening up with a unique tartness, some grassiness, and pepper. Quickly, the flavors move to deep woodsy notes with the introductory flavors disappearing, except for the pepper. As the cigar warms up, the pepper gains in intensity is both flavor and heat. Approaching an inch in, the flavors are beginning to mesh very well as a grape or jelly sweetness arrives. The Mia Dora is burning perfectly leaving behind a firm, light ash.

Middle Third

Transitioning into the second third, darker notes of earth and coffee join in with the cedar, grape sweetness, and, now, mellow pepper. But if you begin missing the pepper, a quick pass of the smoke through the sinuses should satisfy. The pepper is full in flavor and strength on the retrohale. So far, the performance has been exceptional making this an effortless smoking experience.

Final Third

The wrapper unravels slightly with only a few inches of the cigar remaining, which does not seem to be impacting the smoke. The flavors remain consistent with the prior third, with added toasted notes and nuttiness, as well as cocoa and earth on the finish. Overall, the profile continues to be balanced with the flavors and strength ending in the solid medium realm.

Wrap-up

If I had only smoked this cigar through the first third, I would of had no idea of the origin or make-up of the Mia Dora. By the second third, the more typical Nicaraguan flavors arrived, but the profile remained very different than what I have become accustomed to with A.J. Fernandez made cigars. And that is not necessarily a bad thing. I found Emilio Cigars’ Mia Dora to be unique, decently complex, and balanced. The exceptional performance, other than the wrapper unraveling in the final third, is a great testimony to the quality control taking place at A.J. Fernandez’s factory. I was unable to determine the exact MSRP on the Mia Dora, but several sites referenced it being in the $10 range. With that said, the Mia Dora experience is well worth the asking price. I hope this cigar remains on the market even with the departure of Gary Griffith from Emilio Cigars, as I would like to visit this cigar again in the future.

At the start of 2014, I began tracking each and every cigar I have smoked. Well, I may have missed one or two. Based on discussions I’ve seen on Twitter and questions on this site and others, I decided to compile some information that I thought you might find interesting.

Monthly Recap – November

Number of Cigars Smoked: 24

Of those smoked:

Purchased: 10 or 42%

Gifted: 8 or 33%

Samples Provided: 6 or 25%

Of those purchased:

Brick & Mortar: 1 or 10%

Online: 9 or 90%

Most Memorable Cigars Smoked

#1. Illusione – Fume D’ Amour: As I write today, I could not detail any of the specific flavors I noted, but I can tell you that as soon as the smoke began to seep out of the lit foot of the Fume D’ Amour, I was taken from the snowy streets of Gladstone, Michigan to the sandy beaches of somewhere much warmer. This cigar was awarded the #3 spot on Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of 2014 list for good reason. It does not only showcase a very well balanced blend, but it takes you on a memorable experience to much simpler (warmer) times. In my opinion, the Illusione Fume D’ Amour is everything I look for but do not find in Cuban cigars. You can check out Tony’s review of the Fume D’ Amour HERE.

#2. Emlio Cigars – La Musa Melete Lancero: Earlier this year, a good friend and Casas Fumando guest reviewer, Jeff Oda, bombed me with a handful of cigars that he thought I would enjoy . One of the sticks being the Emilio La Musa Melete Lancero. I sung high praises of the Melete toro when I reviewed it in a Quick Draw format back in May so I was anxious to light up the lancero. Restraining myself for six months, I finally broke down and fired up the Melete Lancero. The cigar delivered full flavors showcasing a ton of sweetness, along with rich notes of cedar, earth, and coffee. One thing I did not find in the lancero version was the citrus, orange peel flavor I picked up on in the toro size. I was blown away by the Melete Lancero and now I wish I would have grabbed a handful up while they were still available. But even if you cannot find the lancero, it is worth hunting down the other vitolas in the La Musa Melete line.

Cigar Reviews

PDR Cigars – Flores Y Rodriguez Habano Cabinet Seleccion

The more Flores Y Rodriguez Habano Cabinet Seleccions I smoke the more I am astonished that the cigar is a Dominican puro made out of one varietal of Cuban seed. The Habano Cabinet Seleccion delivers a complex experience that can be rare in puros. The play between the sweetness and citrus notes kept me engaged the entire smoke, while the core flavors of pepper, cedar, and leather were right in my comfort zone. I hope I can find another bargain on these sticks as this is a cigar I would love to maintain in my weekly rotation.

Kuuts, LLC – Kuuts Nicaraguan Blend

For a cigar coming in around $6, a very reasonably priced cigar in my book, Kuuts Nicaraguan Blend is a solid offering. The profile was well balanced, rich, and sweet with a core of cedar and pepper. The cigar performed well with a perfect draw, satisfying amount of smoke, decent burn, and a fairly nice ash.

Ezra Zion Cigar Company – Tantrum P.A.

The Ezra Zion Tantrum P.A. delivered full, balanced flavors, a good draw, satisfying amount of smoke, and a decent burn. This cigar fits right into my wheelhouse with it bold flavors and full strength, but the strength did not overwhelm me.

Tony’s Reviews

Tatuaje Jekyll Monster Series #7

The Jekyll is a solid cigar sporting some great flavors, creamy balance, and a great experience. It wasn’t one of my favorites in the Monster Series, but I still felt it was worthy of a box purchase even having purchased a handful before pulling the trigger on the box. One thing that did impress me about the Jekyll was the evident departure from the rest of the cigars in the Monster Series line.

La Palina Black Label

Needless to say I fell in love with the La Palina Black Label. I’ve been a long time fan of La Palina. While not all of their blends fit my profile, many of them find their way into my daily rotation. The La Palina Black offers a great, full bodied, full strength experience at a decent price point. While the strength was in the full area, never once did it muddy up the flavors as they were a bit complex, very pure, and extremely enjoyable.

Spirited Pairings – Episode 1

Spirited Pairings Episode 2

Fratello Cigars Corona

If it wasn’t already obvious i fell in love with the Fratello from the first time I smoked one. The bold experience, great construction, price and availably all hit a sweet spot with me. Without giving too much away, I’d be shocked if this didn’t make it in my top 10 list this year.

At the start of 2014, I began tracking each and every cigar I have smoked. Well, I may have missed one or two. Based on discussions I’ve seen on Twitter and questions on this site and others, I decided to compile some information that I thought you might find interesting.

Monthly Recap – May

Number of Cigars Smoked: 38

Of those smoked:

Purchased: 23 or 60%

Samples Provided: 9 or 24%

Traded: 5 or 13%

Gifted: 1 or 3%

Of those purchased:

Brick & Mortar: 13 or 57%

Online: 10 or 43%

Top Cigars Smoked by Quantity

#1. J. Fuego – Sangre De Toro (Original) – # Smoked = 4 : I thought Apil’s recap was going to be the last time this cigar was going to end up in the number 1 spot. But, here it is again. I burned through four more in the month of May. I love the full flavors and convenient size. Perfect cigar to close out the day or accompany you on the way home from work.

#2. Henry Clay – # Smoked = 2: I traded for a handful of these sticks a month or so back and I am already wishing I traded for more. If you are fan of Connecticut Broadleaf, this cigar will be right up your alley. This cigar is old fashion, rustic, and dang good. Tony did a quick draw of the cigar here.

Most Memorable Cigars Smoked

#1. Padron – 1926 Maduro – Earlier this year, a small cigar shop located in an area casino had a buy 1 get 1 free sale going on, so I grabbed every remaining Padron 1926 Maduro #35’s on the shelf. The shop already had lower than normal cigar price and with the buy 1 get 1 free deal going on, I snagged the 12 remaining sticks for under $55. This is probably the best deal I have ever come across. In May, Tony and I lit a couple up. I was completely blown away by the balanced yet full flavors with the right mix of spice, coffee, dusty cocoa, and woodsy notes. it will be a sad day when these are gone.

#2. Drew Estate – Nica Rustica – I really hope to wake up to a bundle of these sitting on my night stand Father’s Day morning. This may be favorite release to-date by Drew Estate. Not only does this cigar pump out as much smoke as Drew Estate’s more premium line, Liga Privada, they also pour out as much flavor and strength. As long as the Nica Rustica remains in stock at the local tobacconist, I do not see myself reaching for a LP anytime soon considering the Nica Rustica can be picked up for half the price.

Cigars Reviewed

Espinosa Cigars – Espinosa Maduro

Even though the Espinosa Maduro wears a Mexican wrapper, I did not pick up on the unique, easily identifiable San Andres Maduro flavors I usually get. However, this cigar still delivered very enjoyable flavors of cocoa, spice, earth, and woodsy notes. The rich final third to the stick was a great ending to the experience.

Crux Cigars – Passport (Prerelease)

While I did not find the Crux Passport overly complex, I never found myself bored with the cigar. The cedar, woodsy flavor held strong throughout, accompanied by more subtle citrus and honey notes. The Passport does not lack in the spice department either.

Drew Estate – Herrera Esteli Lancero

Willy Herrera far exceeded my expectation with the Herrera Esteli Lancero – Edicion Limitada 2014. This small ring gauge brought more body, fuller flavors, and a good amount of strength to the table. From start to finish, this stick was an absolute treat.

Emilio Cigars – La Musa Melete

The La Musa Melete was an interesting and intriguing smoke. The subtleties in the profile and the change-ups kept me engaged and desiring more. I will definitely be hunting more of these down and I hope I can still get my hands on the Lancero.

Inspired by a personal friend, Gary Griffith, owner of Emilio Cigars, created the La Musa line of cigars. The La Musa Melete is the second release in the La Musa line following the Mousa, formely known as the Grimalkin. The Melete is produced in Esteli, Nicaragua and available in the following vitolas: Lancero (7 by 40), Corona (5 1/2 by 46), Robusto (5 by 50), Toro (6 by 50), and Torpedo (6 by 52).

The Facts

Sample Provided by House of Emilio
Vitola: Toro
Size: 6 by 50
Wrapper: Nicaraguan Habano
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Drink: Water
Smoke Time: 1 Hour and 25 Minutes

Pre-light Inspection

The Melete was a solid looking cigar and, while basic, the purple and white band popped against the medium brown wrapper. From head to foot, the cigar felt evenly filled and small to medium sized veins, as well as a good amount of bumps, added character to the Nicaraguan Habano leaf.

The wrapper aroma was surprisingly soft with woodsy and earth notes, while the foot of the cigar smelled of pepper and cedar. Upon clipping the beautifully applied triple cap, I found extremely packed tobacco restricting the draw. Cutting down to the final layer of the cap, I found some relief in the draw and was underway with the Emilio Cigar La Musa Melete.

Flavors and Performance

From the first draw, my mouth filled with wildly chewy, flavorful smoke that had an impressive amount of balance all at the same time. The soft cedar notes were more prevalent in the smoke than on the cold draw, accompanied by some unique sweetness, possibly brown sugar. As I burned further into the first third of the Melete, I began to pick up on some peppery spice, which warmed my palate nicely. The first ash dropped well past an inch and I encountered absolutely no performance issues through the first third.

As I pulled into the second third, an acidic quality, along with bitterness, arrived in the mix, reminiscent of orange peel. The bitterness was not overpowering but balanced the sweetness and richness that developed in the woodsy flavors. The ash that was white in the first third became dark gray and the burn remained right on through the middle third.

I did not perceive any nicotine through the first or second thirds. After falling into a relaxed state of mind in the final third, I realized the nicotine must have stepped up a notch putting the strength at just the right amount for me. The Melete continued to build in richness, the sweetness stayed level throughout, most of the bitterness exited the profile, and added earth notes brought the final third of the Melete to a close.

In Closing

The La Musa Melete was an interesting and intriguing smoke. The subtleties in the profile and the change-ups kept me engaged and desiring more. I will definitely be hunting more of these down and I hope I can still get my hands on the Lancero. From this one experience with the Melete, it has already become one of my favorite smokes from Emilio Cigars, up there with the AF1 and AF2 that I adore.

I am back. I’ve been fighting some terrible allergies for the last month or so and finally they beat me down. But after popping some horse pills, I am back in the game. I trust that everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend with lots of cigar smoking, grilling out, hanging with friends and family, and, most of all, remembering those who paid the ultimate sacrifice so that we may enjoy the freedoms we have in the United States of America. Now onto the review.

Back in 2011, Emilio Cigars, owned by Gary Griffith, began making a bunch of noise within the cigar blogger community. Several Emilio cigars received high praises, which was the start of my almost year-long search for his sticks. While they have yet to arrive at the local retailers, I did stumble across a few of the cigars at Fox Cigar Bar in Gilbert, Arizona in mid-2012. Instantly, I fell in love with the AF1 and AF2 lines. On my next visit to AZ in October, I made sure to pick up some more Emilio cigars. This time I snagged the Draig K. With almost seven months of rest, it is time to see what this cigar is all about. The Casas Fumando Team has reviewed the following cigars from Emilio Cigars:

Emilio Cigar – AF1

Emilio Cigars – AF2

Emilio Cigars – Grimalkin

The Draig K is produced at Nestor Plascencia’s El Parasio factory and is available in four vitolas: Corona (5 1/2 by 46), Robusto (5 by 50), and Toro (6 by50). The K began to hit the shelves of retailers in July of 2012. While it is stated to be an “extremely limited” cigar, the Draig K is still available at several online retailers for a price in the $9.00 range.

The Facts

Price: Around $9.00
Vitola: Toro
Size: 6 by 50
Wrapper: Columbian Maduro
Binder/Filler: Nicaraguan and Honduran
Pairing: Water
Smoke Time: 1 Hour and 15 Minutes

Pre-light

The Draig K sports an extremely dark brown wrapper. The Oscuro looking, Columbian Maduro wrapper has some medium to large veins and a nice amount of oils. Half of the cigar closest to the foot has some sponginess, while the other half is firmly packed. I hope this doesn’t lead to any performance issues.

The triple cap has been applied very sloppily, with some bunching on one side. A shallow cut of the cap has opened up a beautiful, free draw. I got so excited to light up this bad boy that I forgot to do my usual pre-light ritual of checking out the aromas off the wrapper and foot.

First Third

The burn is off to a crazy start. I was forewarned by a Casas Fumando reader to dry box the Draig K prior to smoking to help alleviate burn issues. The Draig K has been resting around 60% humidity, a little dryer than normal for me, but it may not have been enough. There is a youngness to the smoke, almost grassy, with a touch of sweetness. Additionally, there are notes of earth, leather, pencil shaving, and pepper, along with a minor spice. The finish of the smoke is of black coffee and a slightly charred flavor. The burn line is all over the place and several touch-ups were required in the first third. The dark grey, flaky ash held to an inch before dropping. The flavors are at the high-end of medium and strength is in the low medium range.

Middle Third

No change in the burn as I make my way into the second third. The pencil-shaving flavor is now at the front of the profile, along with the earthiness. The spice is warming my mouth and leaving a slight irritation at the back of my throat. The Draig K has a tanginess to it that is unique and something I rarely pick up on. The retrohale brings out sharp pepper and tons of spice. The finish has become very smokey and reminds me of the smell of a campfire. Halfway into the second third, the draw has become a little more firm and the burn line seems to be correcting itself. I believe I finally reached the area the cigar felt more firmly packed. As I examined the ash mid-way through the second third, there seems to have been a void in the middle of the cigar. The flavors are full and the strength is creeping up on me.

Final Third

A smokiness is now dominating the flavor profile. The smoky flavor is something I have picked up on with pipe tobacco but not too often in cigars. It is similar to a fired cured tobacco flavor. The grassy flavor from early on is no longer in the flavor make-up and a good amount of earth and pepper remains. With an inch and a half remaining in the cigar, some chocolate notes pull through and remain on the finish of the smoke. The burn is performing much better at this point but still wavy. After an hour and fifteen minutes, it is time to put the Emilio Draig K to rest.

Wrap-up

I really wish the Draig K would have blown me away but I was completely unimpressed. While some enjoyable flavors showed up, the smoky, charred-like flavors stole the show. The construction and burn also took away from this stick. I probably touched-up the Draig K no less than ten times. Even if the flavors were more enjoyable, touching-up a cigar so often becomes burdensome. But with that said, I am still a huge fan of Emilio Cigars and several of the other lines Gary Griffith has out. This cigar was just not for me. I will be picking up a couple more if I stumble across them and will provide updates if they provide a different smoking experience.

So we’re finally getting some warmer weather in the Great White North this past week. It hasn’t been too warm but at least a couple degrees above freezing is better than way below freezing? Either way, it’s given me some time to enjoy my cigars without worrying about hypothermia and frostbite! lol. This week I’ll be taking a look at the Ezra Zion Reagan Honor Series.

Now I’ll be honest that I hadn’t heard too much about Ezra Zion cigars or any of their particular lines before I came across this particular stick. But after doing some research I realized there was quite a bit of buzz around them. Now the company is fairly young looking to have really started pushing itself only last year but the big buzz came when our good friends over at Emilio Cigars partnered up with Ezra Zion to handle their distribution.

We all know Emilio Cigars has a knack for turning around quality sticks and they wouldn’t just accept any cigars, they must be good, right? Well the Reagan edition is one of 2 lines offered by Ezra Zion, the other line is called “Jamais Vu” which was renamed from the original “Inception”. The Reagan series only has two vitolas available at this time, the “President” (6.75 x 54) and today’s vitola dubbed the “40th”.

All the tobaccos in the Reagan are Cuban seeds grown in Nicaragua, as well as being aged a 5 to 6 years before rolling. It also should be obvious that these cigars are a tribute to President Reagan, the names should have given that away too ;). I also want to point out that I love the box press style toro, it’s just awesome and more people should do it. So let’s dive on in and see how this cigar stacks up!

Construction:
•	The wrapper on this Ezra Zion Reagan has a very smooth texture and a color of soft cinnamon brown
•	There are hardly any veins to be seen, super smooth and velvety to the touch
•	I really like the box-pressed shape on this cigar, definitely need more companies to start doing this
•	All my samples were pretty soft to the touch, all the way from head to foot
•	Packing looks to be pretty full at the foot even though they are soft, interesting…
•	The cap has some imperfections but overall it’s finished well
•	A very thin cut leaves me with a perfect draw

Burn:
•	The Ezra Zio Reagan toasted up with ease and quickly, leaving a nice glowing foot to see
•	Through the first inch, the burn has been somewhat wavy but no cause for concern yet, we’ll have to keep a close eye on this
•	A little past an inch in and i got a pretty big peninsula growing that I needed to correct with a small touch up
•	Just before the halfway mark I had another peninsula rear it’s head so I needed another touch up here
•	Some more small touch ups needed towards the end but nothing too major

Smoke & Ash:
•	This cigar has got a ton of smoke from each easy draw
•	It actually doesn’t produce much resting smoke though
•	So far just under an inch in and the ash is looking pretty messy, some pieces are already falling off and it appears pretty weak
•	Despite the flimsy look, the ash lasted past an inch and started to look more clean and stable as the burn continues
•	The ash lasted just about an inch before I tapped it off
•	Second ash was a mix of looking strong and weak again due to the touchup, still lasted about an inch though
•	The third ash is coming along much nicer with no touch ups, it’s clean and string with a light and dark grey striping

Tasting Notes:
•	The wrapper has a very hay-like aroma to it, with just a bit of woodiness
•	I’m getting more hay and woodsy aromas on the foot with a touch of spice thrown in
•	The pre-light draw had some nice sweet cocoa flavors and a touch of spice
•	On the initial draws, I’m getting mostly light coffee flavors so far, a touch of dry spice on the back of my throat as well
•	Through the first third of the cigar, coffee and light spices are still playing the biggest parts
•	The whole experience has been in the mild-medium range so far
•	From the retrohale, I’m getting a nice little bite and a smooth sweet and creamy finish that I’m enjoying
•	As I get into the final third, the spice is ramping up a tad and the sweet coffee has switched over to more of an espresso note
•	The deep rich flavors continue through to the end with a bit of leather being mixed in there as well
•	No real harshness towards the nub so I got to finish this nicely

Final Thoughts:
There were some really nice flavors in the Ezra Zion Reagan Honor Series and I enjoyed the experience for the most part. There were two key parts that brought down my experience today. The main one was the touch ups and wavy burn throughout most of the cigar. The price is also a bit steep, so when I go into a cigar knowing I spent well over $10 for it, I am expecting a good cigar. On the upside, I really enjoyed the flavors here. They were deep, rich and right up my alley so that kept me interested the whole way though. Also, I’m happy that the touch ups did not ruin that flavors here either. All in all, I will be looking for more of these. I’m hoping the burn issues were restricted to the bunch I had because if you take that away, this would be a very tasty cigar!

Pairings:
Today we have another pick from Mill Street Brewery that I’ve also paired with before. I love supporting the local people and when it’s a darn good stout, I will keep supporting them! lol. The Cobblestone Stout is still fairly new to the stores but it seems to be selling quite well. It is a classic stout with lots of deep malty and smoky flavors and even a touch of coffee, but not too much. It’s got a ton of head when you pour it and a bit of a dry finish. I really liked how the rich flavors of the Ezra Zion Reagan. This would pair really well with anything deep and rich, such as a porter or even just a nice strong coffee.

I said there would be news dropping this week, and here it is! As some of you may have noticed (if you’re signed up for our email newsletter) (if you aren’t you can do it on the right sidebar of this site) this review is posted as a different Author. Jeremy! Jeremy shouldn’t be a stranger to most of you, he has posted a few guest reviews already. I met him about a year ago, at my local cigar lounge. Jeremy was already a Casas Fumando reader and crazy cigar enthusiast. Jeremy is big on boutique blends, so expect quite a few of those coming to the site soon. Anyways, here is a quick bio on him before continuing to his review. Please give him a warm welcome!

Jeremy Hensley is a bean counter for a non-profit in El Paso, Texas. He is married to the most understanding wife (he still can’t figure out how she puts up with his cigar smoking hobby), and blessed with two beautiful children. When he is not acting like a kid, he enjoys everything outdoors, especially fishing with his dad in the Great Lakes. Also, he meets the criteria of being a Casa Fumando reviewer: being a hockey fan. Feel free to contact Jeremy anytime via email (jmhensley13[at]gmail[dot]com). And make sure to follow him on twitter @pdn_jdog

And now… Onto his review of the 1502 Black Gold!

After a few days of smoking in cold weather, I now have a much deeper respect for Daniel T. and the suffering he goes through to get reviews up during the chilly Canadian winters….Kudos. Following up with last week’s review of the 1502 Ruby, I will be smoking the 1502 Black Gold. For a little background on the 1502 brand you can see my review of the 1502 Ruby here or visit http://globalpremiumcigars.com. This is what Global Premium Cigars’ website has to say about the 1502 Black Gold:

“If you like strong cigars, you’ll definitely love this one. This particular cigar is made to satisfy the discerning smoker who enjoys bold and strong flavors. It has a double binder and long filler from Nicaragua. With its natural Maduro sun-grown tobacco wrapper, nurtured with all the natural elements where it gets its flavor, especially its strength and character.”

The Facts
Price: Samples Provided by Emilio Cigars
Format: Box Pressed Torpedo
Size: 6 ½ by 52
Wrapper: Country Unknown (Maduro Sun-Grown)
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Pairing: Water
Smoke Time: 1 hour 27 minutes

* The 1502 Ruby reviewed last week was the torpedo measuring in at 6 ½ by 52, not the 6 by 50 (which is the toro) stated in the review. My sincerest apologies.

Pre-light

The band on the Black Gold is identical to the Ruby other than the band being primarily black and, of course, containing the words “Black Gold” instead of “Ruby”. As I remove the cellophane, I am greeted with a very acidic, pungent smell off the wrapper much like vinegar. Laying behind the scenes are common maduro aromas of barnyard, black pepper, and a chocolatey sweetness. The wrapper is very dark, almost oscuro. Not only do the oils on the wrapper come to life in the light, they are easily noticed on the touch. Two prominent veins run down the entire side of the cigar and the wrapper seam is easily noticed.

To the touch, the cigar feels firmly packed, giving just slightly. Like the 1502 Ruby, the wrapper hangs over the foot of the cigar. Enrique Sanchez, owner of 1502 Cigars, informed me that they named this style of foot “The Cigar Lock”. Stay on the lookout for a video explaining why and how it is made. The foot highlights black tea with a touch of sweetness. The cold draw brings out rich tobacco notes with a nice spice on the tongue. Between the cold draw and the aromas off the wrapper, I am really excited to give this bad boy a try.

First Third

The maduro richness is coming right through with notes of molasses, cocoa, pepper, yeast, and spice that rolls across the entire palette. Going back to the vinegar off the wrapper, the spice is much like a pickled jalapeno. Very enjoyable. As I pass the smoke through my nasal passage, the pepper and woodsy notes are highlighted. However, the spice is a little much for me on the retrohale. Each 1502 cigar I have smoked has had an almost perfect, if not perfect, draw and this cigar is no different. The ash held strong for just over an inch before dropping in the ashtray (that is extremely rare). As the cigar burns, you can easily see how thick the wrapper is on the 1502 Black Gold, which is perfect for this winter like weather we have been experiencing in the 915. As I conclude the first third, the flavors and strength are both on the high side of medium.

Middle Third

The flavors really begin to mesh and balance out as I enter into the second third. My wife gifted me a french press coffee maker a few years back that I am absolutely in love with, and the profile is much like a french pressed Columbian roast. Dark coffee notes balanced with a chocolate sweetness. The smoke coats my mouth, leaving an oily texture across my palette. Flavors have been jumping back in forth from the coffee and sweetness to the pepper and spice hit. Coming to the end of this third, I have come across a black tea flavor that is very refreshing. Smoke is creamy and full-bodied providing a depth of flavors. The burn has stayed wavy up to this point requiring a few touchups.

Final Third

I made a mighty entrance into the final third by dropping the ash on my lap. Did I mention how extremely rare it is for me to make it into the ashtray? The filler tobacco is burning much quicker than the wrapper leaf. The thickness of the sun-grown maduro wrapper leaf could be the contributing factor to this. I am picking up toasty, bread-like notes. Also, a flavor I picked up in the middle third, but was unable to identify, has come to the front. Very car oil like. The chocolate and spice are hanging in the background with a dusty chocolate on the finish. The cigar has shifted to the next level. The savoriness and richness of the Black Gold is intense. I am loving the oily texture the smoke is leaving in my mouth. As I put this cigar to a close, I am feeling a nicotine buzz but it is not overwhelming. The hearty dinner I ate (rib eye and mashed potatoes) has offset the nicotine I would normally be feeling at this point. The burn line has corrected itself, leaving me with an ash just over an inch and half.

Wrap-up

First off, I want to give a big “Thank You” to Gary Griffith for providing the 1502 samples. 1502 Cigars really has something going for themselves with this stick. The flavor profile and strength of this cigar was right up my alley. The sweetness that pulled through made this cigar an excellent dessert right after a great dinner. The 1502 Black Gold is a rich, savory smoke that I could see myself revisiting often. The only issue I see is trying to find this cigar in the El Paso area. But hey, you never know.

Well folks, Jeremy is back at it again providing us with another great guest review! Be on the lookout for this guy, he may just fall into more of a permanent spot here at Casas Fumando!

Today, I will be taking a look at the 1502 Ruby. The 1502 brand derives it names from the year Christopher Columbus “discovered” Nicaragua and the cigars are produced by Global PremiumCigars noted by the “GPC” on the back of the band. Since I don’t know much about Global Premium Cigars, and the 1502 brand, I decided to do a little research (is the word research now interchangeable with googling?). GPC’s site has this to say:

“Global Premium Cigars is a tobacco company Proudly Nicaraguan, which owns the most renown and prestigious brand 1502. Truly a Nicaraguan treasure.

In our Premium brand 1502, you will find three tobacco lines with the highest quality, where the sowing process, harvest, curing, aging and selection of each tobacco leaf is our major concern. It takes more than five years from the time of its sowing until the time you can enjoy one of our fine cigars; this is why patience is one of our greatest virtues in the art of tobacco production.

In our brand 1502, you will find three lines totally different from each other, being 1502 Emerald the “Fina Fuerte” (Fine Strong), 1502 Ruby of medium strength and 1502 Black Gold with strongest character. Three spectacular bindings that exclaim the Nicaraguan flavor, which will delight at all times and will make an unforgettable experience.”

On September 24, 2012 it was announced that Emilio Cigars would be handling the distribution of 1502 Cigars. Emilio Cigars has not only made a footprint in the cigar industry by the excellent cigars they have put on the market but also through the distribution of several boutique brands. Emilio Cigars manages the distribution for Ezra Zion (Tony’s review here), Epicurean, Rodrigo, Herederos de Robaina, and Guayacan. Gary Griffith, owner of Emilio Cigars, has such a passion for the industry that bleeds through in all he does. Here is quote from Gary in a recent press release:

“I am fully dedicated to the mission of bringing an array of quality boutique cigars to a broader market, whether under the Emilio Cigars mark, or the mark of other equally dedicated and passionate manufacturers.”

Pre-Light

As I do my pre-light inspection, I notice a few prevalent and minor veins running the throughout the cigar. However, I have never been one to worry about the impact of veins on the overall smoking experience The Ruby sports a maroon band, with the trim, the words “1502” and “Ruby”, and center emblem all in gold. The emblem is similar to the Crusaders’ cross. The wrapper has minimal oils and is velvety to the touch. When squeezed, the cigar feels somewhat spongy. The wrapper hangs over the foot of the cigar, but not as drastic as other shaggy foot (I feel like I should use the word “feet” instead) cigars. The wrapper is mostly uniform in color with slight imperfections and water spots letting me know this cigar has not been artificially colored. The foot appears under filled. As I bring the cigar to my nose, I note sweet earth and barnyard on the wrapper, while the foot reveals a bourbon like sweetness. The head clips easily as I prepare to light up the cigar.

First Third

I am loving the free draw and amount of smoke that fills my mouth which each small puff. Pepper and spice are in the forefront. Beautiful dark, heavy flavors of espresso and earth are in the flavor make up, and a peppery sting is on the retrohale. The spice lingers in the back of my throat for a good amount of time. The burn line is quite wavy but I’m going to wait it out and see if it will correct itself before doing any touchups. The ash is extremely flaky but holding on as I smoke in a cool afternoon breeze. I don’t think I would like to smoke this through one of El Paso’s windstorms but I really don’t ever feel like smoking in windstorms unless I am settled in at the local lounge. As expected, the 1502 Ruby has begun to tunnel but it has not taken away from the flavor department. Flavors are very much full, with strength on the low side of medium.

Middle Third

After a minor touch up, I am into the second third of the 1502 Ruby. Spice in the back of the throat resides, or maybe I am just numb to the burn, but the pepper holds strong. The earth notes become much more prevalent, while a toasty, nuttiness hits the edge of the palette. I am starting to hope for a little sweetness to balance out the profile. The draw and the amount of smoke this cigar is producing is just awesome. The flavors are still delivering at the same level, while the strength has crept up. The strength has been picking up since the start of the 1502 Ruby. I can’t wait to see where it goes from here. On the first sample I smoked, the cigar became extremely spongy about 1.5 to 2 inches from the burn line but the smoke never became too hot to enjoy. That issue was not encountered on this cigar.

Final Third

The flavors remain consistent with the first and second third but the Ruby is now leaving a bite on the tongue. The smoke is also drying out my mouth in the same fashion a walnut does. A small sip of water and my palette quickly restores itself. Some cocoa notes enter into the mix but fade just as quick as they arrive. I would have loved for the cocoa to stick around a little longer. The strength did move up to the high-end of medium, and the burn remained wavy till the very end.

Wrap-Up

The draw and the copious amount of smoke the 1502 Ruby produced was exceptional. While I did come across a few construction issues, none them took away from the overall smoking experience. The same construction issues (burn, sponginess and tunneling) were encountered in both samples. The flavors were rather consistent in its entirety with only a view variations. I found myself craving more complexity, and, at the least, some sweetness in the profile. Also, I paired this cigar with water. A drink that provides some sweetness would be a nice compliment to this profile, such as a big Red Zinfadel. A local winery has an excellent Red Zin that I could see fitting this cigar perfectly. I know I will be revisiting this cigar and try pairing it with the 2010 “Rising Star” Red Zinfandel from Zin Valle Vineyards which is located just outside of El Paso. If you stumble across the 1502 Ruby or can find them online, grab a couple and give it a whirl.

Well here we are, the final winner announcement post of our 3 Year Anniversary Contest over at Casas Fumando. We both have to say it’s been an absolute joy reading everyones comments and checking out all the picture entries we received. We were overwhelmed by the amount of participation from our fantastic readers and the awesome support we received from our sponsors.

As we mentioned in our original post, we both do this out of sheer enjoyment. To share our thoughts and get in touch with others who share the same passion that we do and we believe we’ve come a long way and accomplished quite a bit in our time here thus far. Now we have to admit that the joy we take from this site would be significantly decreased if it wasn’t for the awesome feedback we receive you all of you, our readers. Everytime we get an email notification that there’s been a comment on our posts, we rush to open our emails to see who it is and what they have to say! Whether it’s a frequent visitor or a new name we’ve yet to see, it’s always a treat.

www.casasfumando.com

Now we need to take a moment to recognize all the wonderful sponsors that made our contest possible. The support they provide to us on a regular basis is truly amazing and rarely found in many industries. The cigar world is an unbelievable mix of friendly people and companies that make it a joy to be a part of. So one more time, here’s the list of awesome sponsors, let’s give them a grand (virtual) round of applause!

Bonita Smoke Shop

Roma Craft ToBac

E.P. Carrillo

Rocketfuel Coffee

Emilio Cigars

Ortega Cigar Company

Miami Cigar

Joya De Nicaragua

Smoke Inn

Thank again to our wonderful sponsors!

Now onto the Honorable Mentions from our FINAL Day #9 – Smoke Inn

Now we first need to admit this contest theme had probably our favorite responses of the entire 9 days. There were some awesomely hilarious answers and we were glad to see everyone jumping in and poking fun at both Tony and myself. Any frequent reader will know we love to bash each other for various reasons, especially because Tony is such a slacker (see what I did there! ). Without further adieu, let’s check out some of our funniest comments, 2 chosen by me and 2 chosen by Tony!

Tony’s Honorable Mention #1 – Troy Taormina

I can’t decide who I like best because I believe you are both one and the same person (kinda like that fight club movie). You tipped your hand in one of the comments above with your Toniel/Danielony comments. That was the missing piece of the puzzle I needed to solve this once and for all. I’ve never seen you both in the same room, so I must be correct about ths. And you are so duplicitous, you have created one personality in Texas and one all the way in Canada- just to throw us off the trail. It’s pure genius, but I have discovered your secret, Toniel/Danielony.

Fight Club was an awesome movie! haha, very creative Troy!

Tony’s Honorable Mention #2 – Val

Gentleman. Appreciate the contest love this week. Its been great reading everyones storys of smoking and enjoying life and all the memories created by this wonderful hobby, scratch that, lifestyle we have chosen. Todays round is tough, like asking a father to pick which of his children is his favorite.
Tonys got seniority but Daniel has breathed fresh life into the site. Im sure Tony will attest that constantly coming up with fresh new content is a full time job for one man. Appreceiate the time you have put in for the benefit of your readers! You both have a great sense of humor and I have been compelled to start pairing my smokes with some really good beers and wines in large part because of you guys and being jealous about the flavors youre getting from your smokes that you havent picked up before and vice versa. You both have a gift for photography. Love the shots Tony comes away with and Daniel has stepped up the creativity with the “cigar in the tree” or the “cigar in the wrought iron fence” shot…. lol. More than anything I want to say thanks for your efforts. I cant imagine how much time you guys put into this site but I appreciate it very much and look forward to getting an email everyday saying there is a new post up on the site.
Gotta say thanks to Abe as well. Abe is great guy and a great advocate for all of us and this passion we share. He has built great relationships with cigar manufacturers and created some great blends with them. The Tat Anarchy was amazing and the Pardon SI was fantastic as well. Highly reccomend your readers catch his radio show on the weekend. Great interviews with all the stars of this industry.
In closing of this ass kissing bonanza…. In all seriousness. Thanks to you guys. Appreciate all you do. Look forward to the reviews and the love on twitter. The cigar community is bar none the greatest in all the world. The fact that a Canuck and a Cow Poke from TX like Tony can connect and appreciate one another and have a common ground out the gate is awesome. Happy anniversary! Looking forward to many more reviews.

Kissing butt doesn’t always pay off but this time it got you an honorable mention and almost a prize pack! haha. Thanks again for the awesome words Val!

Daniel’s Honorable Mention #1 – Josh

To be honest with you after this awesome contest I would spoon with either of you (or both) and I am an extremely heterosexual man. I put my vote in for Tony because he liked my photo from last week. Great site and contest, I have it bookmarked and will look often.

This one made me crack up, shows just how far a grown man will go to get some good cigars! HAHAHA, thanks for the laugh Josh, even though you chose Tony!

Daniel’s Honorable Mention #2 – Dan

Hmm..who do I like better…This sure is a tough one…
Tony “T-bags” Casas
Pros:
– His last name means “houses”
– Pairs his cigars with water because, “who cares!”
– Has a photo bombing pussy cat
Cons: See above
Daniel ‘DALAMLDADASMMOSUSESUISUSOsus.32120(sx)” T(nobody knows his last name”
Pros:
– CANADIAN
– Endless supply of beer glasses
– Grows a mean mustache
– Has a penchon for buggery
Cons:
– See pro #4
After careful deliberation for many hours…Drum roll please……………..*drum roll*
DT with a side order of TC, a tall glass of I&G and some rainbow ice cream on a waffle cone.

Not only do you have an awesome name, you also have some great creativity! lol Well done!

Now for our winner of the Smoke Inn Prizepack!

So here is our winner chosen by both of to ensure some fairness and unbiased winner! We actually battled over this one a bit since there were so many great comments.

Our big winner is Michael Constantine

In a society predicated on the basis “What have you done for me lately?” I am going to say I may dislike you both equally. “Why?” you may ask. Well I’ll tell you why. All your contests state that making a simple comment is all that is neccesary to win. However, all winning entries were elaborate and well thought out. Now, being that I am retarded in conveying my stories and thoughts onto paper, I thought to myself, “Wow!, a simple contest even a half witted (good looking and successful) dude like myself can win.” Every passing day my hopes and dreams for all dim wits alike were dashed as the apparent “young author” winners of my youth had struck once again. My stories are the funniest (Ortega D named after the recently deceased Heavy D) or the most polished. But damnit, how many of us BOL are? Imagination is not my strong suit but right now I will pretend to like Tony better because after all, he is supplying the winners info to Abe. Also I have read some of his reviews and his writing skills are on par with mine!

See Michael, whining works sometimes! haha. funny write up here, you had us both laughing! Enjoy the prize pack!

Congrats! Please email your name, and address to “casasfumando@gmail.com”. Thanks again to everyone who entered this contest and all the others we’ve been running. We had a great time with this and we hope you all did too!

I trust everyone had a wonderful, and safe St. Patrick’s day weekend? I did. I laid low, had a few drinks and a cigar with my older brother, and just relaxed. The past few weeks have been insane for me, and I was glad to finally get some rest in. Who cares about that stuff though right? You guys just want to win stuff!

Today’s sponsor is non other than Gary Griffith, owner of Deleware Cigars and founder of Emilio Cigars. Now if you aren’t familiar with Emilio Cigars, you need to get up to date. Emilio Cigars made a HUGE splash last year when it dropped it’s first three lines, the AF1, AF2, and Grimalkin. You can read my reviews of the AF1 here and the AF2 here along with Daniel’s take on the Grimalkin here. The AF1 and AF2 are properly named after the madman that teamed up with Gary to create the blends, non other than the infamous AJ Fernandez who is known for blends such as the Man O’ War series, The San Lotano, Ave Maria, Diesel, Rocky Patel Fusion, La Herencia, and so much more. The Grimalkin on the other hand remains a mystery. Interesting enough there have been many rumors that this blend was actually crafted by none other than Don Pepin. Is it really? No one knows.

Anywho, Gary has always been an awesome guy. He is one of the wittiest, smartest, and most genuine guys out there. Strike up a conversation with him, anytime, about anything and you will see what I mean. You can touch base with him through his website, on Twitter, and on Facebook. He’s a pretty likable guy, most of the time.

Gary has always supported the cigar community. He’s a big believer in making a change. It was no surprise that, without hesitation, he jumped on board to support us. Gary has offerrred up a HUGE Emilio Cigars prize pack for one lucky winner. One lucky winner will win 2 Grimalkin coffee Mugs, an Emilio Cigars polo shirt, and a sampler of all of his cigars (10 in total)! How awesome is that?

Now how do you win all this goodness? I’ll make this easy on you. Anyone who knows Gary, knows that he likes to kick people in the nuts, or at least, threaten to kick people in the nuts. Pretty funny stuff. Now I want you, in a comment below, to tell me two things. 1) Who would you like to have Gary kick in the nuts and 2) why?. You get an extra entry if you have him kick Daniel in the Nuts. (totally kidding on that).

Make it fun, make it creative! Again, please be 18 years and over. I will have Gary choose a winner from the comments tomorrow.

And now, to announce Friday’s winner!

Lisa, over at RocketFuelCoffee was presented all your images, and has chosen one lucky winner. Before we get to the winner, why not look at some of our honorable mentions?

In light of today being Halloween, I decided to dig up another spooky pairing to celebrate the occasion. I’m not sure how Halloween is accepted in different parts of the world but I think it’s mostly the same in North America. The only difference is up here in the Great White North is that the costumes usually get covered by massive puffy coats at this time of year. So you see the puffy-Ninja, puffy-Princess and my personal favorite, the puffy-Superman that can’t fly! lol The temperature is dropping quickly this time a year and is hovering around freezing (32F/0C) as soon as the sun goes down. Hopefully puffy-Superman doesn’t get frostbite!

So the pairing I decided on today to celebrate Halloween is the Grimalkin by Emilio Cigars. If you’ve been following our reviews over the last couple months you would have seen Tony post up two reviews from Emilio, the AF1 BMF and the AF2 Toro. If you take a glance through Tony’s reviews you’ll see that he enjoyed both of them quite a bit. I also had the chance to smoke them and thought they were both quite enjoyable. So does the Grimalkin continue that trend?

If you haven’t heard of Emilio Cigars don’t be surprised. They’ve been making a larger splash in the market recently but up until a few months ago I hadn’t really heard of them either. They are slowly expanding distribution and getting a name out for themselves. You can check the Emilio Cigars website for information on retailers near you that carry their products. Emilio Cigars is owned by Gary Griffiths and there isn’t too much info available on this cigar.

From what I can find, the Grimalkin is made in Esteli, Nicaragua from selected and limited tobaccos. The yield of this cigar is limited based on the harvest amounts of the various tobaccos. So what this basically means is that each year will have a different production amount based on the amount of required tobaccos they manage to harvest. I like this approach, it’s fairly practicle and it’s not limiting production to a set amount of boxes every year. A quick google search shows them available in a few shops so that’s a good sign as well.

Now I found the band here to be kind of interesting… The name “Grimalkin” seems sort of like some creepy monster, maybe like a more evil Gremlin, and it goes nicely with the ominous yellow cat-like eyes on the wrapper. What seems odd to me is that the text is printed in curved pattern which makes it look sort of like the cat is smiling at me? Am I crazy? It’s not really an evil smile either, it looks happy to me! Seemed to take away from the spooky aspect since it made me laugh, lol. But maybe it’s just me? I’ll stop talking now… let’s get to the review!

Construction:
•	The is a very nicely constructed cigar that is evenly round and has almost no veins on it at all
•	The wrapper is smooth and oily which compliments its dark cinnamon brown color
•	The Grimalkin actually feels a tad firm along it’s whole length, I’m hoping that doesn’t mean a tight draw
•	The head of the cigar is finished with a triple cap, it’s not overly neat but not messy either
•	Not the foot looks to be as tightly packed as could be possible, there are almost no gaps here at all
•	The cut was pretty easy considering the firmness of the cigar but the draw was definitely suffering at the start
•	Within an inch the draw definitely opened up which I wasn’t expecting but is a pleasant surprise

	•	Toasting took a bit longer than I expected for this vitola and got a little messy as the wrapper edges started to burn a bit
•	Got started off to wavy burn and it’s continued that way through the first inch or so, hasn’t gottne worse and seems to be nice and sharp
•	Burn seems to be improving slowly, staying sharp and getting straighter
•	It’s actually burning very slowly and easily too, no need to constant draws to keep it lit
•	The burn did round out and burned razor sharp through to the end

Smoke & Ash:
•	Despite a fairly tight draw I am getting a ton of smoke each time, really fills your mouth
•	The resting smoke seems non-stop but at least it’s somewhat moderate, gives off a nice aroma too
•	The ash is coming along nice and clean, looks to be strong but we’ll see how long it lasts
•	White is the dominant color of the ash with some light grey tones, very nice
•	I knocked the first ash off at just about an inch as I could see a crack forming along it but it stayed clean and strong
•	The thick billowy smoke continued to the end and so did the nice looking ash

Tasting Notes:
•	The wrapper aroma has an interesting cedar and grassy touch to it, I usually don’t get much grassy aromas on the wrapper
•	The foot offers more woodsiness, but this time it’s just a generic chopped wood type of aroma, not really cedar. Along with that I’m getting some dirt-like earthiness and a bit of the grass aromas again
•	The pre-light draw brought lots more interesting cedar and a bit of earthiness
•	The initial few draws are very tasty, filled with a smooth cedar, some earthiness and a bit of a cinnamon/nutmeg/clove mixture
•	The body seems to be in the low medium range at the start and comes with a small bit on the retrohale and a cedar finish
•	The mixture of spices is really picking up in flavor intensity as I get near the halfway mark, I’m also picking up some coffee notes which are accenting very well
•	Not sure if it was intentional at all but the mixture of flavors in this cigar seems to pair perfectly with this time of year
•	As I continue, I got some toasted almond type of flavors mixing in, this keeps getting better
•	The woodsiness made a big comeback in the last half, at times it seemed a little overpowering “roasted”. Not quite burnt though
•	The spices, coffee and almonds are still around but with less intensity now
•	The retrohale has pretty much remained the same and the body is gaining a bit of ground and more in the high range of medium now
•	The general flavor profile didn’t change much in the last third and the flavors each took turns being the prominent flavor
•	I was able to smoke the cigar down to my burning with almost no harshness at all, a nice finish

Final Thoughts:
I enjoyed this cigar quite a bit, not sure I would call it a top 10 or anything but it made for a good relaxing afternoon. It had a variety of flavors, burned well and kept me interested the whole time. I think the balance was a lot better in the first half but it wasn’t bad at all in the second half, just had a little more of the woodsiness versus the other flavors. The band still makes me laugh a little but oh well, lol. The flavors seemed to be perfect for fall for some reason, they reminded me of what you would find in pumpkin pie or something. I think I would definitely pick up a few more of these to keep in the humidor. The price is just a touch higher than I would want for this flavor profile, but considering it is a limited release it’s not over the top either.

Pairings:
This pairing was actually a recommendation I got from our resident Belgium beer connoisseur, Tony. I happened to find it down in Florida a couple months ago and finally decided to crack it open today. I thought the weird label fit well into the “silly spookiness” of the Grimalkin. There’s not much I can say about this label other than it looks like someone was high on something when they came up with the idea of a pink elephant dancing in a blue and yellow vortex type of thing… It is made in Belgium by the Huyghe Brewery and clocks in at a nice 8.5% alc./vol. The name itself is called the Delirium Nocturnum and claims itself to be simply a Belgian Ale. Now aside from the crazy label and interesting stone textured bottle, the brew is actually very good. It’s got a nice amount of hoppy bitterness on the finish and when it first hit’s your mouth you get a wake up call to your senses. There’s all kinds of flavors going on including a burst of fruitiness, a nice helping of malt and there’s even some roasted flavors in there. All in all, it’s a great brew and definitely worth trying if you can find it. I know they don’t sell it here in Ontario which is disappointing
Now did it pair well? Hell yes it did. Tony is lucky this time! lol. The fruit, malt and bitterness made an excellent pairing to the coffee and spices of the Grimalkin and I think it would pair excellently with a ton of different cigars and various strengths.
