So here is this weeks second half of the Tatuaje reviews. Just for clarity, I actually started smoking/writing my review before Tony did. So technically, he copied me. Now that we have that out of the way, I dug deep into the humidor and pulled out this special cigar, the Tatuaje RC233.

The RC233 is part of Tatuaje’s Reserve lineup and is essentially the bigger brother of the RC184. And this is definitely the BIGGER brother, measuring up just over 9 inches and a 55 ring gauge. That’s a lot of tobacco! This particular cigar is rolled at the El Rey de Los Habanos factory in Florida, which is headed up by the infamous Don Pepin Garcia. So you know you are getting a high quality cigar here from some of the best people in the business.

You might be wondering where this name came from? It’s actually an Acronym of “Retro Cuba” followed the length measurement of the cigar in millimeters. Also, these are not a one-time limited production cigar. They are produced regularly but the quantities are fairly low so tracking them down can be a bit of a challenge.

It’s pretty easy to tell by the sheer size of this cigar that I’m going to be in for a long smoke here, so if you do happen to light one up make sure to have enough time to enjoy the whole thing. I for one can’t stand re-lighting a cigar that’s been sitting for awhile. So I picked out this cigar today because it is probably that last warm day of the year here and I wanted to enjoy the weather. So here we go!

Construction:
•	A fairly clean tapered cap with one large leaf that blends into the rest of the cigar
•	The has a deep golden brown color to is with some definite oily shine to it
•	The part under the foil was different though, it didn’t have that same golden glow but more of a dull deep brown
•	There is a definite soft texture to the whole cigar when squeezed and it’s pretty darn consistent from edge to edge
•	The foot is too tapered to tell how packed in the filler is
•	I’m surprised to see there are so few veins on this massive cigar, definitely took some top quality wrapper leaves to put this together
•	The cut was nice and easy and left me with a very nice draw despite the very tapered foot

Burn:
•	The tapered foot is very easy to light up since it’s so small so the toasting was super fast
•	As with most tapered foots like this, the burn always goes a little lop-sided right at the start so I needed to do some corrections
•	Through the first couple of inches, the burn is a little wobbly but it holding strong
•	The Tatuaje RC233 sorta stopped burning around the midway mark so I needed a bit of touch ups to help nudge it along
•	After about an hour, I’ve hit the halfway mark and the cigar is burning nicely with only 2 small touch ups so far
•	Burn continued going strong right on to the end with no more touch ups needed, a pretty darn great burn considering the size and complex shape of the cigar

Smoke & Ash:
•	This cigar is an absolute smoke factory right from the start, tons of thick some coming off of each draw
•	The ash started off a bit messy, probably due to the relights at the foot
•	Color-wise, the ash is pretty much dark grey with some lighter grey spots and holding clean so far
•	I tapped the first ash off after about 1.5 inches but I think it could have even held on a bit longer
•	Second and third ash were just about the same length showing some good construction here
•	There were lots of ashes on this cigar and they were all easily passed the 1 inch mark, great construction here throughout
•	The draw stayed perfect right to the end with no issues at all

Tasting Notes:
•	The wrapper had a fairly woodsy aroma to it, lots of cedar
•	The foot brought a little more spice to the table along with the woodsy aromas
•	From the pre-light draw, the spices were really standing out with a tingle on my lips
•	The initial draws brought a hefty burst of pepper out, some thing I always get from Pete’s cigars
•	The pepper notes settled down a bit but are definitely still hanging around along with lots of cedar notes and a bit of a meaty taste
•	I’m starting to pick up some light espresso notes as the cigar keeps burning nicely
•	There is definitely some strength to this cigar right from the start, easily in the medium range already and I predict a ramp up towards the end
•	The retrohale has a nice bite to it but a smooth cedar finish, very nice
•	As I approach the halfway mark, there is some leather mixing in with the coffee, cedar and meaty flavors and they are all balancing out nicely
•	The espresso flavors are really developing nicely with a bit of a nutty flavor making an appearance too
•	The spices started to make a big comeback in the last 3rd and the body is getting into the full range as well
•	Spices and cedar took over in the flavor department near the end, making this one strong stick, be sure to have a good meal and pairing on hand!
•	The strength at the end was very full but surprisingly I didn’t get the nic-kick I was expecting from this behemoth of a cigar

Final Thoughts:
Now I’ve had my ups and downs with Tatuaje cigars and that’s expected, not all profiles will appeal to all people. But today, the RC233 was definitely a bug up in my books. This cigar had a ton of flavors that kept changing and they were always tasty. The quality was definitely top notch and construction was excellent with only a couple minor touch ups the whole way through. I had high hopes for this rare (and massive!) cigar and it did not disappoint. It did have some age on it which I think really helped with the whole experience. If you do happen to have one hiding in your humidor I think it’s an excellent time to bust it out and enjoy, or if you stumble across one somewhere, make sure you grab it! There are still many around if you look, but they aren’t super widely available from what I can tell.

Pairings:
Mill Street Brewery is probably a name you’ve seen in some of my reviews before. They are situated right in downtown Toronto so I love to support the local businesses whenever I can. They have some pretty high yield batches but they still seem to maintain a craft brew flavor to a lot of their varieties. The Cobblestone Stout is one I hadn’t found in the store before so when I saw it I knew I had to grab it. This is a classic stout with lots of deep malty and smoky flavors and even a touch of coffee, but not too much. It’s got a ton of head when you pour it and a bit of a dry finish. It paired well with the Tatuaje RC233 but I think a Port would have gone great to combat the full flavor and strength of this cigar.

Now the Tatuaje Reserva Series is an extension of the popular brown label line called La Seleccion de Cazador. A few years ago, Pete Johnson started a limited release cigar called the Cojonu that would be released every 3 years. This is the 2009 edition and as I write this I believe most stores have already started receiving the recently released 2012 edition. One quick note on the year in the name, it’s not related to the tobacco leaf age or anything like that, it’s specifically linked to the year it was released.

The Tatuaje Cojonu 2009 was released on March of 2009 so as I smoke this it has just recently passed its 3 year anniversary. The blend in the Cojonu’s have an increased amount of Ligero over the brown label versions and are touted to be a fairly strong blend so nicotine sensitive cigar enthusiasts may want to tread lightly here. The 2009 edition is rolled at Don Pepin Garcia’s factory located in Miami, Florida, the El Rey de Los Habanos Factory.

There are a total of 4 cigars in the Cojonu line, the Gran Cojonu, Cojonu 2003, Cojonu 2006, Cojonu 2009 and the most recent Cojonu 2012. The Gran Cojonu is the only one of the line that has no band. the other 4 cigars have the standard brown Tatuaje Label and on additional band. The black and gold band is standard for most of the Reserva lines and in our case today it simply says Cojonu 2009. Now let’s get to setting the flame to this cigar!

Construction:
•	Here we have a fairly rough looking cigar with a milk chocolate colored wrapper and some hints of golden tones
•	the veins on this Tatuaje Cojonu 2009 are somewhat medium sized and the wrapper has some interesting toothiness to it
•	The cap is finished with a cleanly wrapped single leaf, not perfect but it’s nicely bound
•	The cigar is firmer than a baseball bat from end to end, I could probably hurt someone with it, hope that doesn’t affect the draw here
•	Despite being super firm, the foot did not appear overly packed which is a good sign i think
•	After trimming the tapered cap a bit with my double bladed guillotine cutter I was glad to be welcomed by a draw that felt just about right
•	Before even reaching the half-inch mark there was some tar buildup which was tightening up the draw. I may have made too small of a cut so I trimmed a bit more and we’re off to the races again
•	The body started picking up shortly after I passed the mid-way point but it’s still within the medium range I’d think
•	Some of the spices started coming back too, more of a light white pepper at the moment
•	There was a bit too much glue on the secondary black band and it tore the wrapper a bit

Burn:
•	The foot of the Tatuaje Cojonu 2009 was actually very stubborn on the toasting, the middle of it refused to light up, I switched up my culinary torch to a more focused single flame torch and that seemed to do the trick
•	After the tough start the burn line was a bit wavy but nothing that needed attention
•	Seems that within the first inch there were already a couple times where the cigar felt like it was almost burning out and needed me to take a few extra draws
•	In the second inch the wave got a bit out of hand so I needed to give it a little touch up
•	The cigar continues to feel like it’s going out and requiring extra draws which is really taking away from the experience here
•	The last third of the cigar required multiple touch ups to keep it burning properly

Smoke & Ash:
•	So far there isn’t a ton of smoke coming off each draw, it’s taking a few attempts to get a decent volume
•	There is a fair amount of resting smoke after setting the cigar down each time and it seems somewhat consistent
•	The ash through the first inch is sort of starting to “bloom”, not too strong or clean and a lot of flaking all over the place
•	The color of the ash is mostly a nice light grey but there are quite a few black accents all over the place
•	I tapped off the first ash after about an inch because it looked like it was getting really weak and messy
•	The next ash reached the same 1 inch mark, even though this one was a lot cleaner it still lacked strength so I tapped it off to save it from a deadly plunge to the concrete!
•	The third went back to being messy and weak, probably due to multiple touch ups and only lasted about an inch

Tasting Notes:
•	The wrapper has almost no aroma to it, just a bit of woodsy notes and some tobacco leaf
•	The foot brings more of the woodsy notes and adds to that an interesting sweet cinnamon type of aroma
•	The pre-light draw has a bit more cinnamon spice to it along with the woodsy and just a touch of sweetness, maybe even a touch of pepper there on the tongue and lips
•	The initial draws jump out with some of the signature Tatuaje/Pepin spices, mainly pepper, followed by the cinnamon and woodsy flavors I was getting on the pre-light inspection
•	After the initial spices died down I’m left with nicely balanced blend of espresso, woodsy and sweet cinnamon flavors
•	As for the body, I’d say I’m at the low end of medium right now and the retrohale started with a kick but now it’s a smooth coffee finish with no bite
•	The espresso flavors have toned down a bit and it’s getting replaced by an interesting dark chocolate flavor that is really mixing nicely with the sweet cinnamon
•	All the flavors really mixed together nicely and balanced well in the last third, especially the dark chocolate and espresso notes
•	I have to say I’m not getting the huge hit of strength I was expecting from ligero packed cigar but that might be because it’s 3 years old now
•	Despite all the touch ups, the flavors are still enjoyable and constantly changing
•	There was a slight build up of harshness near the end but nothing overpowering, most likely due to the re-lights I had to perform here
•	I put down the cigar a little short due to all the re-lights but the flavors were present and enjoyable right to the end

Final Thoughts:
This is one of those cigars I was really trying to enjoy. It had a lot of the right elements but the whole package together didn’t sing huge praises for me. On the flavor front, there were some very enjoyable notes that kept me on my toes, that’s the part of this cigar I really enjoyed. It was the burn and draw issues that hampered the experience for me here. I did have a few samples before reviewing and it was the same story for the majority of them. So the flavors were awesome but the burn and draw left something to be desired, and at a price point of $13.00 I would have liked the whole package to be neat and tidy. I still think this is a worthwhile cigar to try and I will still seek out the 2012’s but I think Pete has some much better sticks under his belt that I would rather enjoy.

Pairings:
Today’s pairing is yet another new port that I stumbled across at the store. It’s from Portugal, as are most ports, and the winery is called Quinta do Noval. Although it’s name is just “Black”, this bottle is another standard Late Bottled Vintage Porto with some nice labels and marketing to it. There’s actually a embossed bird on the glass near the bottom, not sure if it’s visible in the picture but it’s pretty neat. So this porto is not all marketing, it’s actually got a decent product in the bottle as well. At it’s base is a nice, full-bodied red that seems comparable to a Merlot. On top of that are some excellent dark berry notes and a hefty helping of oak flavors that make up for a delicious treat. At only $17 a bottle, I can’t complain at all here, this was a great but and pairs perfectly with most any cigar. As you can guess, it made a great compliment to the Tatuaje Cojonu 2009. I think a nice scotch or strong espresso would also have gone well here.

My Father Cigars S.A. has a rich history in the Cigar world and a vast amount of blending experience in it’s ranks. The infamous Garcia family is behind this growing company and factory based out of Nicaragua. The Garcia family includes the well respected Don Pepin Garcia as well as his up and coming son Jaime Garcia. Together they are responsible for a variety of great cigars including the the My Father lines and the Tabocos Beaez cigar lines, making up a total of 5 cigar lines.

The Garcia family is also involved in a variety of other cigar lines not under the My Father name. Some examples include the Don Pepin Garcia line, the Jamie Garcia line, some Tatuaje cigars, the Ashton San Critobal line, El Rey De Los Habanos and many others. He has also been the creator of a variety of house blended cigars for many different Brick & Mortar Cigar shops. His son, Jaime Garcia, is just recently making a big splash in the cigar world with his original My Father cigar and the newer Jamie Garcia Reserva Especial. Between these two gentlemen, there are a variety of great cigars attached to their name. Aside from blending, the My Father Factory is also the home production facility of some other cigars such as the Nestor Miranda 1989 and the recently released Guillermo Leon line.

The My Father Le Bijou 1922 is blended by Don Pepin Garcia himself as a homage to his father. The name “Le Bijou” means ‘The Jewel’ in French and the year 1922 is the year his father was born. Don Pepin set out to make sure this was an excellent smoke worthy of his fathers name. The wrapper used in this cigar is extremely rare and very difficult to grow. The Pelo de Oro wrapper (commonly called Nicaraguan Habano Oscuro) is not common due to it’s sensitivity and has hardly ever been used for a large number of years. It comes in asa lighter and creamier version of a traditional Oscuro. Being a Nicaraguan Puro cigar, this Le Bijou 1922 is made completely of Nicaraguan tobacco. Let’s see how this rare “Jewel” fares in today’s review.

Cigar: My Father Le Bijou 1922
Wrapper: Nicaraguan Habano Oscuro
Binder: Nicaraguan

Construction:
• This cigar is instantly appealing to the eyes with it’s smooth oily appearance and a dark chocolate brown wrapper
• There are some visible medium sized veins but none that look threatening to the burning experience of this cigar
• It has a bit of give when squeezed slight but springs back quickly, there is also one spot near the head and one near the foot that is slightly softer
• The triple cap is very well applied, it’s clean and smooth and blends in extremely well
• The wrapper is very ornate and detailed, another eye appealing point on this fantastic looking cigar
• Cut was a little firm with my double bladed guillotine and produced a lot of flakes but still came out fairly clean

Burn:
• Toasting was fairly easy and even with my single flame culinary torch, the center was a little dark but glowed brightly after the first draw
• Some minor waving at the start but it has been razor sharp going into the half-way point here
• Staying lit effortlessly as well, not need to continuously draw to keep it going
• No issues right to the nub, the burn was razor sharp the whole way through

Smoke & Ash:
• Tons of smoke right from the initial draw
• A fair amount of resting smoke as well, giving off what seems to be just a burning wood aroma
• The ash is nothing short of picture perfect, it’s clean round, no flaking and very light grey/almost white color
• Although it looks perfect it appears a little weak as the first ash fell off at around half an inch
• The second ash held on much longer, easily passing one inch
• The smoke machine did not let down, always a mouthful of smoke from each draw bringing with it all the great flavors

Tasting Notes:
• The wrapper has a grassy aroma to it and is complimented by some spicy notes, perhaps just a touch of pepper
• The foot has a creamy cocoa and woodsy aroma, there is less spice here but still a touch of nutmeg can be detected
• Pre-light draw is very woodsy and earthy with some pepper and nutmeg spice in the mix
• Initial draws are mostly cedar mixed with a white pepper spice and a smooth creamy finish
• The retrohale has no bite despite the spicy notes I’m getting, it’s very smooth and has the same creamy finish
• As I progress I’m getting some nice espresso notes and the spice is slowly fading
• The espresso notes are balancing just perfectly with the creaminess and the cedar
• I can’t emphasize enough how smooth and balanced the cigar is as I apporach the halfway mark, the finish is just right, not even a touch of dryness. I could smoke this easily without a beverage!
• Just passed the halfway mark the spiciness came back, specifically some more white pepper
• The cedar notes also came bursting out again leaving the espresso behind but the wonderful smooth creamy finish is still lingering
• The retrohale also developed a little bite and the finish has a lot more cedar than before
• The cigar started off with a mild/medium body but as I near the last two inches it’s definitely approaching a medium/full with a touch of cocoa appearing now and then throughout the whole time
• There was almost no harshness built up all the way to the nub, definitely a nub-worthy cigar

Final Thoughts:
This was a very enjoyable cigar. The My Father Le Bijou 1922 had lots of interesting flavors and they changed up frequently keeping my palate constantly searching for the new notes. This is definitely the type of cigar you want to sit down and pay attention to in order to get it’s full experience. All factors considered I don’t really have anything I can complain about, from the pre-smoke visuals right down to the nub there was nothing I can say I didn’t enjoy. The one gripe if any about this cigar will be the price, it rings in at over $11 and that may turn away some customers but I have to say it is a worthwhile investment. It may not make it into your regular rotation for some people but it’s definitely worth having some around. The construction, dimensionality, flavors and smoothness all make it a great experience.

Pairings:
The Unibroue brewery from Quebec, Canada is quickly making it’s way to the top of my favorite breweries list. I’ve said this before but their brews never disappoint. I’ve included the La Fin du Monde by Unbroue in a previous pairing for the Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story. The standard bottle size comes adorned with a gold foil wrapper top and an odd label with a demon and some people paddling a canoe in a red sky. The flavors are incredibly complex bringing a variety of hoppiuness, bitterness, fruitiness, and even a slight floral note. It is uniquely refermented on a yeast base and clocks in at 8% alc./vol. It’s definitely worth trying and although not the best pairing here I think it actually added a layer of interesting flavors to this already complex cigar. It may come as no surprise here but I think a Port would have been the perfect pairing for the cedar, spice and creamy notes of the Le Bijou 1922. Other good pairings would include red wine, scotch, coffee or a dark soda.
