The Good Stuff:

Released in March, the AVO Improvisation Limited Edition 2021 is the newest cigar to be added to AVO’s portfolio. Inspired by the copper material used in both music and art for centuries, the blend features an Ecuadorian Sun Grown wrapper over Ecuadorian binder and filler tobacco from the Dominican Republic. The cigar is offered in a single 7 1/2 x 50 format and comes packaged in boxes of 20 running $16 a stick with only 4,550 boxes produced. I picked mine up from our good friends at Cigars International.

Prelight:

The AVO Improvisation 2021 starts out with a beautiful, milk chocolate-brown wrapper that is consistent in color with the exception a few lighter areas around the minor veins that run their course throughout the cigar’s long, slender body. The wrapper’s texture is very thin and brittle with a good amount of oils and slight tooth. The wrapper is laid seamlessly over itself show casing some minor tobacco webbing as it leads up to the cigar’s round, double-wrapped, cap. The cigar itself is very firm, rightly packed, and extremely heavy. It’s polished off by the standard AVO crest in a beautiful mixture of white, black, gray and copper metallic ink. There is also a secondary band with the same color and the year “2021” embossed in the front.

The wrapper on the AVO Improvisation Limited Edition 2021 gives off some light musky aromas while the foot of the cigar carries strong spice and pepper over earthy aromas. The cold draw produces mostly earthy flavors over some slight spice, dark chocolate and moss.

First Third:

The AVO Improvisation Limited Edition 2021 starts off with some very light, black pepper over musk, grains, pecans and leather with some really light mossy undertones. The draw is absolutely perfect as each tiny puff kicks out massive cloud of thick, white smoke which stick around for a considerable amount of time before dissipating while the cigar releases a good amount of stationary smoke as the oils burn off the wrapper while the cigar rests in my ashtray. The burnline is razor thin with only some slight waves as it produces tightly compacted white and light-gray ash which held on for about 3/4 of a inch before falling into my ashtray.

Second Third:

Into the second third of the AVO Improvisation Limited Edition 2021 and a creamy mixture of leather, dark chocolate, and musk lead the charge backed by light earthiness, moss, and pecan. This is a great flavor profile. The retrohale brings out some soft spice, and sharp pepper that I don’t pickup during the standard experience. The cigar is still burning like a champ without any help from torch and I close out the second third with only a minor nicotine kick.

Finish:

The flavor profile remained much the same into the final third, and thats a good thing. The dark chocolate, leather, musk mixture is still the dominant force in the profile backed by pecan, vanilla, and earthiness. It took me almost 2 hours to smoke this cigar down to the nub. I experience no harshness, nor any extended heat. I never once had to reach for my lighter to touchup or relight the cigar. My only gripe was the wrapper split on all the cigars I smoked. I first thought it may had been over-humidified so I dry boxed it, but same result. While the splitting was minor and did not affect the experience, the fact that it happened so consistently was worth mentioning.

Overview:

The AVO Improvisation Limited Edition 2021 is a perfect example of what I love from AVO cigars. A complex, yet balanced experience with unique, raw flavors at a affordable price tag. Yes, affordable. I put most AVO cigars up there with the likes of Opus, Davidoff, and Padron and at $16 a pop for such a long smoking cigar I would call this an affordable super-premium cigar. This is a great stick to have around when you are looking for something that will last you a while yet still deliver the experience you are craving.

Pairing:

The Alesmith Grad Cru is a 10% Belgian-style strong ale brewed at the Alesmith Brewery in San Diego California. The beer leads with sweet apple and pear backed by light brown sugar, caramel, light malt, and piloncillo with a very light mouthfeel before finishing with more apple and pear long with more malt and caramel. This isn’t a complex beer, nor does it need to be. It’s a perfect summer ale and the flavors really added a special something to the AVO Improvisation Limited Edition 2021.

Pre-light

Oils glisten off the dark tan Ecuadorian Sun Grow wrapper leaf that has some color imperfections, its fair share of small veins, and a few bumps here and there. There is one soft spot in the middle of the cigar, while the rest of the stick feels somewhat spongy. Some unique aromas are identified off of the wrapper including seasoning salt, barnyard, and a faint sweet hay, while the foot shows some rich cedar  and manure.

The cap get the job done but not overly  pretty. A quick cut through the cap reveals a perfect draw delivering lots of sweetness and richness. The dry draw has notes of Caramel, cedar, and earth in the background. A cinnamon spice lingers on the palate and adds some warmth.

First Third

Unexpected full flavors liven my palate. There are some rich woodsy notes, along with some bitter earth and grassyness. At the half inch point, the bitterness completely exits the profile and the rest of the profile begins to mesh very well. There is a full amount of bright, white pepper that is showcased on the retrohale. A spice heat lingers on my palate between each puff and toasted coffee and cocoa are on the finish. A somewhat jagged burn line is leaving behind a beautiful light gray ash.

Middle Third

Rich, dense smoke continues to pour out of the 5 1/4 by 50 Robusto. The rich woodsy notes are accompanied by some cinnamon spice and a fresh bread-like flavor. There is also a new floral / perfume quality that has joined in. The spice has diminished with hardly any warmth to be felt. The finish remains consistent with the previous third and the strength is in the full arena. I am feeling quite a nicotine kick at this point of the cigar.

Final Third

Quite a drastic change in the profile is experienced as I make my way into the final third and a quick touch-up is required on one side of the wrapper that has been burning poorly for some time. Caramelized sugar, thick yeasty bread notes, and coffee now makes up the profile. The floral notes are now on the finish accompanying the coffee and cocoa. The cocoa on the finish is much sweeter than earlier.

Wrap-up

Over my 10 years of cigar smoking, I can probably count on one hand the Davidoff cigars I have smoked. The price tag has always deterred me. Most, if not all, of the ones I have smoked have been gifts. Naturally, a cigar with a $20.50 price tag set my expectations unrealistically high. And all I can say is that I am very happy that Famous Smoke Shop sent these my way.  The Millennium Blend delivered in all areas. Complex, balanced, full flavors and body, perfect draw, copious amount of smoke, and solid ash. There is no way that these would ever enter my weekly rotation or even monthly rotation, but I know the next time I celebrate a special event or milestone in my life, I will be considering the Davidoff Millennium Blend as my smoke of choice. I recommend you grab a 3-pack to keep on hand for those special moments in your life.

The Cabiguan Guapos is made in Esteli, Nicaragua at My Father Cigars S.A., the factory responsible for most of Tatuaje products. Available sizes include 5 5/8 by 54, 5 by 50, 5 5/8 by 46, 4 5/8 by 42, and 7 1/2 by 38. Tony reviewed the 5 ⅝ by 54 Gaupo here.

The lancero vitola of the Guapo is only available in the sampler. While the sampler will be in regular production, it will be made in limited quantities during each run.

Pre-light

The Ecuadorian Sun Grown wrapper is consistent in its medium brown color. I am met with a pungent aroma once the cellophane is removed, along with cedar and wet earth notes. The foot gives off more of the cedar and earth with an added sweet vanilla smell. The wrapper leaf is marked with bumps and veins giving it a slightly rugged look.

The Guapos Lancer0 is filled evenly all the way down to its neat, pointy cap. The cold draw is on the dry side with the same cedar and earth notes from the wrapper and foot aroma, along with a faint clove flavor. I am also feeling a spice tingle on my lips the lingers for a good amount of time.

First Third

One thing I have come to expect from cigars produced at My Fathers is spice. And the Guapos does not disappoint in that area. I am met with a considerable amount of spice in the first couple of puffs that warms my mouth and lip, and leaves quite the burn through the sinuses during the retrohale. The other flavors are deep and in-line with the cold draw being of cedar and earth. As I take a smaller, shallower draw, I notice the pepper lessens and some sweetness comes through. I can’t put my finger on it yet, but it may be a vanilla-like sweetness. The finish is a bit dry with a dark fruit flavor. The burn-line is crazy thin and first ash made it past an inch.

Middle Third

Making my way into the second third, the dry cedar has moved to the front of the profile with the unique, vanilla sweetness. The sweetness is refreshing and brings a nice balance to the smoke. The earthyness is gaining ground and an acidic citrus has joined in right around the halfway point. As I knock off the ash, I find a small tunnel in the center of the cigar. So far it is not having any kind of negative impact on the flavors or smoke production. Even the smallest of draws fills my mouth with a satisfying amount of smoke. The flavors are full, with the strength falling not too far behind.

Final Third

The Tatuaje Gabaiguan Guapo Lancero is still smoking cool with two and a half inches left. The pepper has calmed but in no way completely departed and the spice is still warming my mouth and lips. The vanilla I got early on is really only noticable on the finish, along with a dusty cocoa flavor. The deep cedar and wet earth notes are still holding strong as I begin to wrap up this 7 1/2 by 38 lancero.

Wrap-up

I have been a fan of Tatuaje for some time, but there were several cigars included in the sampler that I had yet to smoke and the Cabaiguan Guapo was one of those. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect first experience with a cigar. The cigar burned cool and even. There were no touch-ups or ashes dropped in my lap. Just a complex, flavorful cigar to sit back and relax with. One thing I noted on this lancero was how big, deep draws brought out an overwhelming pepper, while a small shallow draw highlighted  the nuances of this stick. As is the case with lanceros, you need to slow down your regular smoking pace to fully enjoy what this traditional vitola offers. I highly recommend you get your hands on these. You won’t be disappointed.

The Good Stuff: First and foremost, I couldn’t find these locally so a huge thank you to Skip (a.k.a. ChiefHava) for hooking a brothah up. As most of you know the Avo Annual limited edition release was created to celebrate the famous jazz compose/aficionado Avo Uvezian birthday. The LE12 La Trompeta was created this year to celebrate the man’s 86^th birthday. I can only hope to look as good as Avo when I get that age. Anyways, this edition in particular holds a special meaning to it as the cigar is designed to actually replicate a “trumpet” style smoking experience with an elongated, tapered cap and three small circular wrapper cutouts that represent keys on a trumpet. Interesting design to say the least. The blend starts with Dominican Ligero and Peruvian seco filler, bound by a Dominican Piloto binder, then wrapped in a very dark Ecuadorian Sun Grown wrapper. Much like the previous LE releases La Trompeta is only available in one size (6.5 x 54 pyramide). There were only 100,000 cigars released (10,000 boxes of 10) with a retail price of $15.50 a stick. Every year I look forward to these Limited Edition releases, especially since the LE10 which is still my favorite Avo blend to date.

Prelight: The obvious story here is Avo’s interesting design on the Trompeta, attempting to make the cigar actually look and feel like a Trumpet. Even though I would call it more of a flute approach, I commend the company for doing something fun and out of the ordinary. As is the story with most Avo Cigars, the construction is top notch on the Trompeta. The cigar starts off with a beautiful dark chocolate looking wrapper that is just covered in thick oils. I actually had a hard time getting the texture of the leaf to show through as the oils on the cigar would just soak up all the light. Anyhow, Avo’s trompeta is a huge cigar. The meeting stick starts off with a very thick wrapper, and a very heavy, tobacco-filled body. There are a few mid-sized veins running the length of the body up to the crazy long, tapered, belicoso style cap. I swear almost a third of this cigar is cap. I guess that plays off the whole “Trumpet” style design on this stick.

The wrapper of the Trompeta gives off a very musky, dirty, earthy aroma. It almost smells like wet mud with some spice. The foot of the cigar is very earthy as well with the core of the aromas surround a wet, oaky, woodsy aroma. Avo’s in my opinion, always give off very unique aromas. The cap on the Trompeta cut very clean and easy using my double bladed Palio cutter. I clipped it about halfway through the taper. The cold draw matched my prelight aromas almost identical, pushing out some very wet, mossy, oaky, earth and tobacco flavors.

First Smoke: The Avo La Trompeta starts out with only a slight pepper to it. The pepper only lasted a few draws before it completely faded away and what I was left with was some very mossy, spicy, chocolate earthy tobacco flavors. When I mention spice, I talk about flavors like nutmeg, cinnamon, basil, and so fourth. Basically it’s a mixture of those that I can’t quite nail. Avo cigars are one of the very few cigars that I actually pick up the mossy style flavors in. The draw on this cigar is spectacular pumping out lots and lots of thick, white smoke with every little puff. The burnline was razor sharp but had a ton of smaller waves that I can only hope don’t turn into big, annoying ones. The ash left behind was a solid, dark great and seemed to flake off a lot more than most Avos.

Halfway There: The second third of this Avo La Trompeta is much of the same. The experience is still overtaken by lots of the mossy, earthy flavors but a bit of creamy sweetness has moved in. It’s almost like the difference between cream and sugar in coffee. It’s really starting to mellow the full-bodied cigar out a bit. The retro hale is very nice and surprisingly mild coating my nasal passage with nothing more than oaky tobacco. The burnline has completely corrected itself and is burning dead even and still razor sharp. I have to add, it’s a bit windy today and I’m glad to see even with that, this cigar is burning like a champ. I am feeling only a little bit in the nicotine department. I really like that Avo has taken a step to finally producing cigars with a bit of strength over the last few years.

Finish: There was a significant ramp up in both body, and strength coming into the final third of this Avo Trompeta. The mossy, earthy tobacco flavors are still very strong, taking center stage to some bittersweet chocolate, leather, and again this overall creamy composure. Despite having a bit of strength, the Trompeta is incredibly easy to smoke. The cigar burned perfectly after correcting it’s own waves in the first third and required absolutely no touch ups or relights for the entire two hours it took to smoke this beast. Although the cigar did have a bit of a punch, I didn’t at any time feel overwhelmed by the amount of nicotine in it.

Overview:  We will start off with my thoughts on the cigar. Despite hearing that this cigar didn’t deliver, I thought it was a pretty good cigar. Actually, a damn good cigar. Each of the last handful of annual limited editions Avo has released haven’t disappointed. This cigar started with flawless construction, great flavors, and a terrific burn. Did it live up to the Avo LE10 that I hold so close to my heart? Not at all. In fact, I would rank this cigar right up there with the Heritage.  That being said, the Heritage can be found for less that $10 a stick, and in some cases, much less. If this cigar is being compared to the Heritage then it’s safe to say that the value just wasn’t worth it. It’s an eye catching solid cigar, but at the price point I’d much rather grab a few Heritage or even a Padron. What I will say is that it’s very much worth trying yourself. It’s a talking piece to smoke around your friends because of the unique design, and it’s a traditional annual limited edition release. Pick one or two up, but I wouldn’t go spending the coin on a box.

Pairing: Again, I’m a sucker for Belgian beer. Anyone who reads this blog knows this. What you may not know is that I really enjoy Lambics, no matter how sweet or girly they are. Lindeman’s has to be one of the easier Belgian Lambic beers to find around these parts. That being said, I am usually limited to whatever is in season. To my surprise I recently stumbled across a brew by them that I hadn’t seen before, Lindeman’s Faro. Basically, Faro is similar to their Gueze in that the beer doesn’t sport any fruit flavors. Instead, it’s a lambic that boasts of it’s more natural ingredients. While the Gueze is wheat-based (any my personal favorite) the Faro is a barely based lambic. Brewed at the infamous Brouwerij Lindemans, this 4.2% ABV sweet beer really hit the spot. The Gueze plays off it’s tart, bitter flavors while the barley in the Faro open you up to a much sweeter, milder experience. With honey, brown sugar, malt, and just a touch of sourness the Faro really is a hell of an experience. This beer went absolutely wonderful with the bittersweet, earthy flavors of the Avo La Trompeta, and I am pleased to announce that it has also taken over the number one spot as my favorite brew that Lindemans produced. Seriously, pick one up if you can find them. This smaller bottle ran me $5.99 which is pretty reasonable considering it’s a Belgian Lambic.
