One of General Cigars newest releases is the Dunhill Aged Maduro. The aged Maduro joins the ranks of the Aged lines which Dunhill have been slowly adding too since taking over the brand. The Dunhill Aged Maduro is a bit of a different beast when you consider most Dunhill cigars are a bit on the milder, more modest side, the Aged Maduro aims for a bold, more prominent profile. The blend starts with a Sun Grown Ligero Maduro Wrapper from and undisclosed county, Nicaraguan filler, and a mixture of Nicaraguan and Dominican filler tobaccos.

The Dunhill Aged Maduro is a full production blend which is composed of 3 sizes: the Marevas (5 1/8 x 42), the Short Churchill ( 5 1/2 x 54), and the Short Robusto (4 x 54). Each comes packaged in boxes of 10 running between $9.45 and $11.95 a stick.

Size: 4 x 54
Wrapper: Sun Grown Ligero Maduro
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan / Dominican
Body: Full
Strength: Medium/Full
Price: $9.45

Prelight:

The Dunhill Aged Maduro carries a very, very dark brown, almost black wrapper which is not only consistent in color, but about as dark of a cigar as I have ever seen. The wrapper carries a great amount of tooth, a few larger veins, and a decent amount of oil. The wrapper is very thick, and dense, and incredibly hard. The Dunhill Aged Maduro is capped off with a round double wrapped cap. The cigar is polished off with a nice elegant red, white, and gold band. The wrapper on the cigar gives off a whole mess of bold cocoa and espresso aromas while the foot of the cigar is a bit more subtle carrying lots of spice and natural tobacco scents.

Draw/Burn:

The burn on the Dunhill Aged Maduro is razor thin and dead even. The ash is probably one of the most solid, consistently packed ashes I have seen lately holding on for about and inch before falling off with a loud thud into my ashtray. The burn was consistent through entire experience. I never once had to reach for my torch to either touch up or relight. The cigar burned very fast, this short robusto took a little less than an hour to take down and I experienced no harshness, nor extended heat even into the final inch.

Flavors:

The Dunhill Aged Maduro started out with a huge pepper boom that I wasn’t entirely expecting. The pepper hung around for quick some time, but as it begins to settle loads of cocoa, espresso, and pecan sneak their way through the flavor profile. As I venture through the cigar the espresso takes over and there is a bit of sweetness introduced, but not enough to really balance out the smoke. I think a larger format would probably be a better choice for this cigar.

Thoughts:

I went into the Dunhill Aged Maduro with the assumption that it was just going to be another solid, classic maduro. I was pleasantly surprised. The choice to use bolder, strong tobaccos really made this cigar unique in comparison to what I expect from Dunhill. The flavors are great, and keep in theme with the boldness of them, I just wish there was a bit more complexity. All in all this is a great cigar, and I really want to see how some of the other formats preform.

And now, the contest winner!

First, thank you all for the entires. I was floored with the amount of traction this giveaway got. We do this for you.

Secondly, let’s give a round of applause to Gotham Cigars for sponsoring the review. This was an awesome way for use to give back to all of you who have supported us over the years.

And now, the winner is….

The three country blend is produced at General Cigar’s Danli factory, Honduras American Tobacco S.A., in five vitolas: Box-Pressed Robusto (5 by 50), Toro (6 by 50), Torpedo (6 1/4 by 52), Churchill (7 1/2 by 50), and Gigante (6 by 60). Prices ranges from $10.15 for the robusto to $12.95 for the 6 by 60 gigante. Dunhill cigars are distributed by General Cigar Co. in the United States.

The Facts

Samples Provided by General Cigar Co.
Price: $10.15
Vitola: Box-Pressed Robusto
Size: 5 by 5o
Wrapper:Ecuadorian Habano Ligero
Binder: Nicaraguan (Jalapa)
Filler: Nicaraguan (Ometepe and Esteli) and Honduran (Jamastran Valley)
Smoke Time: 1 Hour and 5 Minutes

Pre-light

The Dunhill Heritage 5 by 50 box-pressed robusto is consistent in its medium brown wrapper that has a orange/rusty hue. Wrapper seams and small, dark veins are visible, but to the touch it is velvety smooth. Upon removing the Heritage from the cellophane, I am met with a pungent aroma of barnyard and vinegar. Once the pungecy subsides, more mellow wet earth notes present themselves.

A rich, butterscotch smell is found on the foot, followed by a pepper spice that tickles my sinuses. The double cap has a small tear, wrinkles, and wavy lines, but gets the job done I suppose. Opting to punch the Dunhill Heritage, a stiff draw shows off more rich notes of cedar, sweet butterscotch, and some lingering pepper.

First Third

Dark notes of wet earth, black pepper, and pencil-shavings are first to arrive on the scene. An unidentifiable sweetness is creeping up in the profile. There is some sort of sour, citrus dimension to the smoke and a diesel flavor lingers on the finish. An even burn, a firm, white ash, and the copious amount with each draw is making this an effortless smoke thus far. Let’s hope it stays that way. Barely making my way through the first third, I am already feeling a kick in the gut from the strength.

Middle Third

The flavors are coming across lighter, or maybe more balanced, on the palate as I pull into the second third of the Dunhill Heritage. The deep pencil-shaving notes are the most dominant, paired alongside a chewy leather flavor. The sour quality remains in the background. Finally working up the nerve to retrohale the smoke, the pepper flavor is full but the spice heat is mild. The finish has developed to a much more pleasant flavor of vanilla that you would find on the nose of spiced rum. The cigar is chugging along as I am already half way through in 30 minutes.

Final Third

As I allow the cigar to rest in the ashtray, smoke pours of the Dunhill Heritage. The flavors are composed of char or burning wood, earth, pepper, and the sourness from earlier, Finally, an anise or black licorice sweetness has surfaced. The flavors have been full throughout and the strength has been hanging right in-line.

Wrap-up

Early on in the Dunhill Heritage robusto, I was afraid the strength was going to overpower the rest of the experience. However, the strength remained a steady full without becoming overwhelming allowing the cigar to showoff its complexity in the flavor department. While the flavors were a bit heavy for my palate at some points, if you enjoy a full strength smoke and dark, heavy flavors this cigar may be for you.
