For the Pactum, Abe Dababneh (Smoke Inn’s owner) teamed up with Dion Giolito of Illusione cigars to create a cigars experience that is as bold as Abe himself. The result was the Pactum, or partnership. The Pactum features a bold Mexican San Andreas Capa Fino Maduro wrapper along with a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan Fillers. A total of 400 boxes of 15 cigars each will be released in a single 5.5 x 56 box-pressed format running $8.95 per stick. This is a limited run which you can only get at Smoke Inn so stock up here.

Prelight:

The Illusione Pactum is an absolutely gorgeous looking cigar (It’s actually supposed to represent Abe, so yeah), rustic, meaty, and flawless construction. The cigar starts off with a very heavy toothed, thick, dark brown wrapper. The wrapper showcases some slight oils and a natural appearance through it’s dark brown exterior and medium/darker webbing throughout the tobacco leaf. There are a few medium sized veins as the wrapper leaf is seamlessness folded over itself. The format sports a beautiful soft box press with a very firm fill leading up to a round double cap. The Illusione Pactum is finished off with a standard styled Illusione band which showcases a royal blue print with the words “Cigares Prive” embossed in the front. “Cigares Prive” translates to “Private Cigars” which is a series that Illusione produces for exclusive accounts across the nation.

The wrapper on the Illusione Pactum gives off only a slight cocoa aroma while the foot of the cigar really smells like an interesting mixture of black licorice and tobacco. We’ll see if that translates into the smoking experience. The cap cut clean and buttery using my double bladed Palio cutter. The black licorice really comes through on the cold draw and I really hope to see it in the actual smoking experience. Other flavors included some soft spice and cocoa.

First Third:

The Illusione Pactum starts off with very little pepper which quickly drops off leaving behind some tartness, sweetness, cedar, cocoa, tobacco, and yes, the black licorice. The draw on this cigar is incredible. Each little puff kicks out a ton of thick, white smoke. The format on this cigar is very comfortable both in hand and mouth. The burn line started a bit screwy but quickly corrected itself and is now burning even, and razor thin leaving behind a brilliant trail of tightly compacted, white, and light gray ash which held on for about an inch before falling into my ashtray with a thud.

Second Third:

The spice and black licorice have really taken over into the second third of the Illusione Pactum. The backing flavors are still lots of natural tobacco, cedar, spice, sweetness, and some great cocoa. It’s a pretty bold experience so far and I’m really enjoying it. The retrohale is very stout coating my nasal passage with some strong pepper and spice. The burn line is still perfectly even and I’m already feeling a nice little nicotine kick as I close out the second third.

Final Third:

The last third of the Illusione Pactum showcases a much creamier flavor profile leading with the spice, cocoa, and a bit of honey sneaking in backed by a bit of coffee, leather and earthiness with a pinch of black licorice. The draw and burn line have been absolutely perfect every step of the way. This cigar burns very slow and actually took me two hours to take down to the nub. No harshness, no bitterness, no heat, just an awesome smoking experience an a nice little nicotine kick.

Overview:

As described, the Illusione Pactum packed a punch. It’s a strong cigar that delivers a bold experience and probably isn’t recommended for those new to smoking. This is another great addition to the Microblend series and I jumped all over Illusione being inducted into the series as they are probably one of, if not my favorite cigar company out right now. The Pactum, to me, seemed liked an Ultra/Gigantes hybrid, and that’s not a bad thing. It’s a great cigar, at a great price, with a great experience. While it’s not my favorite cigar in Dion’s portfolio, it’s one that will have a place in my regular rotation for as long as it’s around.

Pairing:

Dogfish Head’s Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew was released in 2013 and took the beer community by storm. Featuring artwork from Mile Davis’ Bitches Brew album this beer was made in collaboration with the 40th anniversary of the release and was so popular they brought it back for another run. Bitches Brew is a Imperial Stout brewed at the Dogfish Head’s brewery in Delaware coming in at 9% ABV. Bitches brew is three threads imperial stout, and one thread honey beer with gesho root. The honey is really evident leading the brew with some great sweetness as it leads off with lots of spice, black licorice, and caramel with a heavy mouthfeel before finishing smooth with lots of malt, cocoa and even more black licorice. Its easy to see why I decided to pair this beer with this smoke. The cocoa, spice, sweetness, and black licorice made an ideal pairing with the resident flavors in the Illusione Pactum. The only pairing I could think that would be as good would be a nice glass of heavily spiced tawny port.

Camacho’s Ecuador has been touted all over the place within the cigar community as of late and I just couldn’t wait to get my hands on a few. The new design, new blends, and word of mouth had me seeking these out.

The Good Stuff: As most of you know by now Camacho Cigars decided to completely revamp their portfolio last years consolidating their portfolio, reblending their core lines, and completely revamping their marketing and design. The Ecuador is the seventh release in their core line and probably the most talked about out of the bunch. The Camacho Ecuador gets its name from the obvious, the Ecuadorian Habano wrapper the cigar is embraced in and fits perfectly within their new campaign which simply entails “The Bold Standard”. The Camacho Ecuador comes packaged in 20 count boxes and in 5 different sizes: the Robusto (5 x 50), the Toro (6 x 50), Gordo (6 x 60), Churchill (7 x 48), and Figurado (6 1/8 x 54 x 42). I picked up a handful of these from Cigarhuslter.com. Thanks goes out to them for the top-notch service.

Prelight: The Camacho Ecuador sports a crazy shiny, oily wrapper. Seriously it looks like someone waxed this thing. I can practically see my reflection off the tobacco leaf. Along with the gleam the wrapper is a medium to dark brown with lots of darker areas around the medium sized veins and the natural webbing in the tobacco. The wrapper feels really fragile and thin as it leads up to a round triple cap. This may actually be a double cap as one of the cigars I have on hand looks to carry a double cap while this one has a triple. Not too sure, but either way the caps are flawless. The Camacho Ecuador is packed incredibly tight with tobacco making it as hard as a rock all over. This is fine with me as long as it doesn’t plug up the draw. The Ecuador is polished off with the new Camacho band design which I absolutely love. Each blend has a different color, the Ecuador’s is a bright, turquoise. The band has the Camacho brand printed largely across it with the statement “Infamous since 1962” and “Ecuador” with the brands scorpion mascot as well.

The wrapper on the cigar gives off a really musky, leathery aroma while the foot of the cigar carries nothing more than natural tobacco with a bit of dirty earthiness. The cap was surprisingly easy to clip using my double bladed Palio cutter. The cold draw produced a lot of the musk I was picking up along with a really grainy, natural, doughy mix of flavors.

First Smoke: Right off the bat I was greeting with a big pepper rush that I wasn’t expecting at all which quickly faded away after the first few draws. The Camacho Ecuador then presented me with some bold musk, leather, spice, raisin and hints of clove and sweetness. The body is full right away and it will be interesting to see how it keeps up later in the experience. The draw on this beast is perfect kicking out a whole mess of thick smoke with every little puff. The burnline is razor thin and dead solid leaving behind a tightly compacted medium and light gray ash which held on for and inch before tumbling into my ashtray.

Halfway There: Into the second third of the Camacho Ecuador the flavors began to subside a bit as they all started to mix in with one another. It makes for a creamy experience but the body became just a bit muted here for a while. But as I continued into the second third the flavors began to ramp right back up leading off with lots of musk and tons of woodsy flavors backed by the raisin and leather with bits of espresso and spice. The retrohale showcases large amounts of wood flavors with some nice, subtle spice. I found it incredibly easy to retrohale this cigar .The draw is still perfect, some very sight waves have formed in the burnline (which don’t bother me one bit), and I am actually feeling some slight nicotine as I close out the second third.

Finish: The Final third of this Camacho Ecuador is finishing just as bold as it started although the flavors have switched up quite a bit. Now the cigar is leading with some REALLY strong spice, lots of clove with musk and espresso backing along with some slight fruit and sweetness. I love the changeups, the boldness, and the complexity this cigar offers. It’s taken me about an hour and a half to take it down to the nub and never once had to reach for my torch as it’s burned solid the entire time. I do feel a bit of a nicotine kick, but it’s not real bad. The last inch carried no harshness, a bit of heat, and a whole lot of spice with little hints of the pepper I picked up in the first third.

Overview: What can I say about this cigar other than it rocked. First of all, I am a huge fan of what Camacho has done with their branding. The old branding was just a bit too flashy in my opinion and now they are letting the cigars speak for themselves. The Ecuador is complex, bold, smooth, and incredibly affordable. What else can you ask for? A box maybe? That’s where I’m going. This cigar fits perfectly in anyone’s rotation whether you are a seasoned smoker who enjoys complexity or a novice looking to break into premium cigars without breaking the bank. This is by far a box worthy cigar and knowing Camacho, they will be pretty easy to come by. On a side note, I have smoked a few of the other Camacho reblends and have enjoyed them a lot. That being said, the Ecuador has to be my favorite core line Camacho cigar that I have smoked in a really long time. Don’t be surprised if it’s a contender in this year’s top 10 list not only on our site, but many others.

Pairing: A cigar with as much flavor and body as the Camacho Ecuador needs a beer that can hold it’s own and 21st Amendment’s Lower DeBoom handled itself quite nicely. Lower DeBoom is a flavor powerhouse of a Barleywine Brewed in California coming in at a whopping 11.5% ABV. I can’t get this brew in Texas but was able to score it in a beer trade with my buddy Patrick. Big thanks goes out to him for the hookup. Lower DeBoom starts out with some really strong citrus and spice which transforms into a bold fruitiness before finishing off with some lingering spice and malt. The spice, fruit, and malt paired up perfectly with the spice, fruits, and natural flavors in the Camacho Ecuador. A word to the wise though as Lower DeBoom, and most other barleywines for that matter are almost always too strong in body and will easily overpower almost any cigar unless they are maxed-out in the body category like this Camacho Ecuador was.

So I know that I am behind the times with this review and just about every other blog has one up by now. It’s better late than never tough right? I hope. While Daniel is getting his butt introduced to the married life I was home firing up Liga Privada Unico Serie Feral Flying Pig.

I contemplated even doing a review for this cigar. Not cause it was bad, but strictly because I am a bit partial to a lot of Liga Privada blends. It’s not secret how fond I am of the number nine, but the more I smoke the Feral, the more I realize just how different the blend is. That being said, I will, as always, be as open and honest as I can about this and ever cigar we review on the site.

The Good Stuff: Anyways, lets get into this. The Feral Flying Pig is one of the newer releases in Drew Estate’s Liga Privada Line. Taking a seat in the Unico Series, the Feral flying pig is quite a departure from the No.9 and T52 flying pigs of the past not only in terms of size, but blend as well. This beast of a pig is actually a completely different blend then any of the Ligas currently in Drew Estate’s portfolio. Jonathan Drew and Steve Saka have both stated that the Feral is significantly stronger than it’s old brothers. Saka also mentioned that in his opinion this is the best flying pig to leave the Drew Estate factory to date. These cigars come in boxes of 10 and run $15 a stick.

Size: 5 3/8 x 60 – Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf Madruo – Binder: Brazilian Mata Fina – Filler: Nicaraguan – Body: Full – Strength: Full

The Feral Flying Pig starts out with a very, very, very dark brown, oily wrapper. Seriously, this cigar is as close to black as it gets. Unlike the No.9 and the T52, the Feral’s wrapper is just perfectly consistent as each and every inch of the cigar matched the next. The Feral Flying Pig starts with a tapered, perfecto style foot which leads through a beefy body up to a tapered, circular, pig-tail style cap. There is only one medium sized vein through out the body of the cigar.

One thing I’d like to mention is that this cigar is incredibly thick, and heavy. There has to be tons of tobacco stuffed in this thing. You could club someone with this cigar and do significant damage to them. I can only hope that this won’t lead to a plugged, or tight draw. The band on the Feral matches the rest of the Liga Privada line Identically with one exception, this is the first, released band that isn’t employing a handwritten typeface. Instead the word “FERAL” is printed in a nice, bold, Serif typeface. Interesting. The wrapper of the Feral gives of just a really strong, really bold, cedar and sweetness aroma. Although getting a whiff of the foot was a little tricky, the action paid off as I was greeted with a whole lot of spice, sweetness, and cedar. I didn’t really pick up any of the stronger tobacco or earthy aromas I was expecting. The Feral clipped very easily despite being packed with tobacco using my double bladed Palio cutter.

First Smoke: The Feral Flying Pig was a breeze to light up using my single flame butane torch. I was really expecting this cigar to start off with a crazy flavorful and pepper filled profile, oddly enough it had neither. Instead, the Feral Flying Pig started out incredibly smooth with nothing more than a coffee and bittersweet chocolate flavor. As I smoked on bits of cherry and cinnamon started to work it’s way in, but I was still blown away with how smooth this cigar started off. It was very different than the usual In-Your-Face Liga Privada experience that I have grown to expect. After I got about halfway through the first third a little bit of black pepper started to sneak it’s way in. This was a crazy start to a cigar. Let’s hope this cigar keeps throwing curve balls my way. I was worried about the draw being too tight but I am glad to report that it was the opposite. At first the draw was actually a bit loose but as the foot fully toasted the draw became spot-on filling my mouth with thick, white smoke with every little puff. As with every cigar in the Liga Privada line, there is just a massive amount of stationary smoke given off white this cigar sits in my ashtray. I’m always scared how the burnline will pan out with perfecto format cigars but the Feral is burning super thin, and dead even leaving behind a trail of semi-flaky white and light grey ash which held on for an inch and a half before giving way.

Halfway There: Into the second third of the Feral Flying Pig and the black pepper has complete faded away. This is probably the one Liga Privada that I can recall that has the least amount of pepper. The flavors are still a creamy mixture of dark chocolate, coffee and cherry with some nice cedar, cinnamon and a nutty flavor on the aftertaste. The retrohale is interesting as the only flavors I could really pick out was a very strong and sharp cedar along with some soft coffee notes. The burnline is still dead even and I am actually feeling a bit of nicotine already.

Finish: Interesting enough there is a crazy moss/woodsy/earthy flavor sneaking it’s way into the final third of my Feral Flying Pig. This is a flavor that I usually tie to Davidoff and AVO cigars. It’s a very good, and interesting flavor and added a nice mix-up to the profile of this cigar. There cherry is still there but it has become very tart while the creamy coffee, nutty, chocolate flavors have simmered down a bit. There is still not any pepper. One other reason the absence of pepper strikes me as off is while we were at the Drew Estate factory a while back Jonathan Drew actually had us light up Ferals as they were just bunched, before they had wrappers, and before they went into the molds. The one thing I remember was how much pepper the blend had. It’s interesting to see how much the wrapper and final blend changes. This cigar took me two hours to take down and hats off to the Drew Estate team as the cigar required no touch-ups, or relights the entire time. That’s unheard of for a perfecto/double figurado. I left this cigar with a very nice little nicotine kick. It’s got some strength that’s for sure.

Overview: Steve Saka mentioned that he though this was the best Flying Pig they have created to date. Do I agree? Nah. But with reason, and a very biased reason at that. I am a No. 9 guy and the No. 9 flying pig is still my favorite pig out of the bunch with the Feral in a close second. What I do really like about the Feral Flying pig is the difference in blend. It’s much closer to a T52 blend to a No.9 but is hardly comparable. Although it is full-bodied, and full-strength the Feral is much smoother with an overall deeper, richer composition. It’s a total diversion from the other cigars in the Liga Privada line. Now is it worth the $15 price tag? To me, it is. I would even go as far as saying this is very box worthy. It’s complex, well constructed, and an overall great experience. I would choose this cigar over most Davidoff, AVO’s, and other cigars in the $15 area. But then it comes down to cigars with lower price points. While I enjoyed the Feral I truly think I would take a No.9 Robusto or a Dirty Rat over the cigar almost any day of the week.

Pairing: Here is the classic example of a pairing gone wrong. Flying Pig, Bacon Maple Ale? Sounds like a match made in heaven no? It couldn’t have been further from that. 99% of the time I have already drank the beer and smoked the cigar that I am pairing it with. This time I ventured out with something that worked well in theory and got caught slipping. The Rogue Voodoo Doughnut ale starts with some very slight maple sweetness which is quickly overcome by nothing but charcoal and ash. Seriously, it tastes like I put my cigar out in this beer. I probably would have liked this beer if there was in fact more sweetness, or more of a maple flavor. That chary aftertaste just ruined it for me. I’m sure I’ll get a lot of people bashing me who actually like this beer, and that’s fine. It just does nothing for me except rape my wallet at $14 a bottle. After the second third of the cigar I actually put the beer down and switched to iced tea which is a proven perfect pairing with almost any cigar.

I hope you all enjoyed a safe, and great holiday weekend. I know I sure did. I got lots of family time in, friend time, and relaxation time. Plus the influx of drinks consumed this weekend weren’t bad either. Sun setting the weekend in style, I am brining you a very interesting cigar, Drew Estate’s Liga Privada Unicos Series “A”.

The Good Stuff: I was one of the very many people intrigued as rumors began to fly about a possible Liga Privada in “A” format. Not that I am an “A” kinda guy, but that’s a huge departure from anything currently in the Liga Privada line. Not to mention that I am an open Liga Privada Fan Boy. That won’t make this review biased though, trust me. After about a years worth of rumors Jonathan Drew confirmed that they would in fact be making an “A” sized Liga Privada, and began to hype it up with some Jonathan Drew style tweets and Facebook posts.

I just had to put the "A" next to a Dirty Rat for size comparison. And for laughs.

As time went on, we discovered this wasn’t a real release, but instead a special type of product. What I mean by that is, Drew Estate actually created the Liga Privada “A” as a special promotional product. The “A” is actually a tweaked T-52 blend. More than likely they needed to refine the blend and mellow it out a bit to fit the format. I’m glad too, I don’t think I could handle a straight up 9 inch T-52. These cigars will not be available to purchase, instead, they will be given out at certain Liga Privada events due in part to the limited amount of T52 leaf as well as Drew Estate wanting something special as a thanks to it’s customers. Plus, in my opinion, I don’t think the format is easy to sell. I was actually on Smoke Inn’s radio show “Kiss my Ash Radio” this passed weekend with Erik Espinosa from EO Brands and he made mention that he was actually present some time ago when he and Jonathan Drew opened the first box of Liga Privada Unicos “A”. That being said, I think it’s safe to say these will be readily available at Liga Privada Events.

I don’t smoke “A” sized cigars often at all. But there is a reason for it. “A” sized cigars were created to honor celebrations. This is a special treat sort of size, to be smoked to celebrate special occasions. With good reason too, they are normally 9” long and usually take around 3 hours to smoke. That being said, lets get started!

Size: 9 ¼” x 47 – Wrapper: Connecticut Stalk Cut Habano – Binder: Brazilian Mata Fina – Filler: Nicaraguan/Honduran/Dominican – keep in mind this is just an assumption, knowing that it’s a tweaked T-52 blend.

Prelight: This is a GIGANTIC cigar. It almost feels too heavy to hold and wants to fall from my hand when I hold it near the head of the cigar. That goes with all “A” sized cigars I guess. They aren’t the most practical cigar, but they aren’t trying to be. Once you get passed the size of this cigar you are greeted with the beautiful T52 style wrapper that we have all grown to love. The wrapper is incredibly oily with medium to dark browns and oranges mixed in. The construction is perfect with only a very few larger veins. Usually veins of that size would run the entire body of a robusto sized cigar. I just though it was funny that the Liga Privada Unicos “A” had 2 longer veins stacked one after another, and they still only ran about half the body of the cigar. Anyways, the wrapper and the entire cigar in general is very solid and durable. There aren’t any soft spots on the entire cigar. The cap is very similar to the pig tailed, rounded cap that the Dirty Rat carries, only twice the size. And the band is identical to the Unicos Series bands that all the Liga Privada carries, blue and gold with a gigantic “A” on them.

The body of the cigar gives off a nice, strong cedar and sweet tobacco aroma while the foot of the cigar gives off nothing more than a very subtle spice. The cap clipped extremely easy and clean using my Liga Privada Double Bladed cutter. The cold draw was interesting, instead of greeting me with a nice pepper I was expecting, The “A” let loose this crazy strong cedar and sweetness which got me interested in just how “tweaked” this blend really is.

First Smoke: Right away the Liga Privada Unicos “A” kicked out the flavors I expect from the T-52. Cedar, spice, sweet tobacco, and cocoa. One thing was still missing, the pepper. In all honesty I’m glad too, a 9 inch pepper-bomb just doesn’t seem like it would sit too well with me. Despite the distance in which the smoke must travel, the draw was perfect and plentiful. It only took me my normal 2 puffs to get a mouthful of thick, white smoke. The burnline is a bit wavy and thick, but nothing too concerning, white the stationary smoke, as with most Liga Privada blends, is crazy. This cigar is spewing out tons and tons of thick, cedar scented smoke as it sits in my ashtray. The ash left behind is somewhat flaky, and really dark grey with spots of lighter grey. It only held on for about two thirds of an inch before giving way.

Halfway There: The sweetness has really started to pick up into the second third of this Liga Privada Unicos “A”. By this point, I’d be finishing a robusto format cigar, but this cigar is still keeping my attention by adding a ton of spice and the sweetness I mentioned to the already sweet mashup of cocoa, and cedar. The burnline has completely corrected itself and is burning dead even now. The retrohale is BADASS coating with an absolute blast of cedar each time I do it. I am feeling a very slight nicotine kick after the second third, but no where near what I was expecting form a Liga Privada blend.

Finish: Switching it up again, I started to get this nice, subtle floral flavor during the last third of Drew Estate’s Liga Privada Unicos “A”. The sweetness has mellowed out quite a bit, and I am left with a really smooth cedar, cocoa, coffee and floral mixture. Surprisingly for the size I’m really not picking up much more than a really slight nicotine kick. The burnline has been perfect since the second third, and I haven’t had to relight, or even touch up this cigar once. All in all it took a few minutes shy of 3 hours to take down this beast of a cigar. It’s crazy how the final picture looks similar to the length of a “First Smoke” robusto picture. This thing is huge.

Overview: I have a short attention span. Very. I blame the internet and technology for that. That being said, I never really got bored while smoking this Liga Privada Unicos “A”. It had just enough change ups to keep my attention, but at the same time was smooth and seamless enough not to overpower me with each jump. I think finding balance in a cigar as big as this, and keeping the cigar’s complexity has the be an incredibly difficult task for the blender, and Drew Estate did a hell of a job with it. The cigar wasn’t as powerful as the other blends in the Liga Privada Line, with good reason. I don’t think I could handle a 3 hour T-52 It would leave my crying on the floor. Although this isn’t a cigar I’d smoke often, I really enjoyed it a lot. And in terms of the format, it’s not made to be consumed often. As stated, it’s a celebratory cigar. And I really think it’s a great addition to my humidor when I want something special and have a few hours to burn, pun intended.

Pairing: I said it many times, and will say it again, Winter is the season for beer. With all the awesome porters, stouts, and Christmas ales it’s a wonder why I’m not trashed from morning to dawn. St. Bernardus isn’t a stranger to this blog. In fact, it’s one of my favorite breweries out there. This Christmas season Abbey Ale hits the mark on all accounts. It’s strong (10% ABV), sweet, flavorful, and well balanced with fruity, malty flavors and just a hit of spice. Needless to say it went perfectly with the Liga Privada Unicos “A”. At about $13 a bottle, it’s not something you can drink everyday, but when you find it, pick it up. It pairs great with any full bodied, full flavored cigar.

This week’s review is a limited edition blend that I look out for every year. The Camacho Liberty 2010.

I smoked a few of these cigars, but this one in particular was actually sent to me by our good friend Mike at Mikestogies.com. Mike was the man who actually sent over the sticks I did on my first blind review set which you can view here. He’s a great guy, with great reviews.

The Good Stuff: Each year Camacho releases a limited release cigar called the Liberty Series. The tradition started back in 2002 and is one of my favorite annual releases. They retail anywhere between $18 and $22 a stick and come in boxes of 10 individually coffin-boxed cigars. If you’d like to read our review of the 2009, you can see Daniel’s take on it here. Again, the scenery may look a bit different. I am doing yet another review at my favorite local shop, Tobacco Rd.

Size: 6 x 54 (11/18) – Wrapper: Ecuadorian Sumatran – Binder: Honduran Corojo – Filler: Honduran Corojo and Dominican Ligero

Prelight: The Camacho Liberty 2010 holds true to all the past Liberty series in terms of presentation. The Liberty starts out encased in a dark blue, shiny, painted coffin box. Each box has a sticker with each cigar’s unique number. This one happens to be 775 /40,000. Once the seal on the box is broken I was showcased with a nice cedar scent and a tissue wrapped cigar placed carefully inside the box. Once then tissue is removed you are presented with the standard, flashy, black and silver Camacho band that you would expect. One interesting thing about this band is out of all the 2010 Liberties that I smoked, this was the only one with a black band. All the rest of them had a dark blue similar to the color of the paint on the box. The band is very similar in design from the previous years. The Liberty 2010 also comes fitted with a nice little foot band that simply states “Liberty Series” in silver on dark blue ink. The wrapper on the Liberty is a very light, very consistent, milky brown. The smaller foot leads up to a much wider body before tapering off to a smaller, rounded cap that matches the size of the Liberty’s foot. For the most part the cigar is very firm to the touch with the exception of the foot. There is a crack at the top of the cigar from the head to about the middle of the band. Mainly just a wrapper crack. It looks as thought it didn’t harm the binder. Normally I wouldn’t review a cigar that already has a crack in it, but this is my third Liberty 2010 from three totally different boxes that have similar cracks. Not to mention I had a few similar issues with the 2009’s I smoked last year. This just must be a delicate wrapper. The wrapper has this immense scent of straight up cedar. It seriously smells like the inside of a brand new humidor. which happens to be of my favorite scents in the world. Some how the foot has an ever stronger cedar scent with just a little whiff of spice. The Liberty cut very clean with my double bladed cutter. Lucky enough, the crack didn’t increase much in size. The cold draw kicks out this wonderful milky, cedar flavor and leaves behind just a tiny bit of spice.

First Smoke: The Liberty 2010 starts off slightly different than I expected. Instead of being smacked in the face with soft cedar, the cigar starts off bold, with some earthy, leather notes. Not long after the cigar turns into this just massive cedar bomb, holy crap. This is the reason why I love these Liberties. Outside of the cedar there is a slight spice sneaking into the mix. All around this cigar is starting off very smooth and flavorful. The draw is easy, and plentiful, but the main story is the stationary smoke. The Liberty 2010 gives off a ton of cedar scented stationary smoke that even overpowers the other three cigars that are going in the room at the time. The burnline is slightly wavy, but I always have that problem with this size. They almost always fix themselves. The ash is a very light grey with some slight flakes, but overall tightly compacted. The ash held on for a little over an inch before giving way.

Halfway There: One major difference with this year’s 2010 Liberty is a big one for me. The cigar burns so much slower than the previous year. The 2009 was soooo good, but at the price point I was always hesitant to spend the money to buy a cigar that would burn so quickly. The cedar is still rocking very hard into this second third. The spice is still there as well with notes of leather and some really creamy chocolate. The retrohale in this cigar is absolutely amazing. After a few retrohales I swear my nasal passage made me feel as if I have been locked in a humidor for the last 3 days. The body is slowly starting to creep in as well. It’s not full, but it is noticeable. The burnline has completely fixed itself and is holding solid as I expected. The ash is ugly, but the experience is wonderful.

Finish: The cedar has begun to fade a bit into the final third of this Camacho Liberty 2010. The cedar is still the main flavor with the backing flavors of spice, and this really strong leather flavor. The body has really ramped up too, which is totally unexpected. I’m even getting a slight nicotine kick from this one. There was a slight harsh build up into the last inch but nothing too concerning, it was almost expected. All in all the cigar finished very smooth, a bit heavier than I expected, and burned much slower taking about an hour and forty five minutes to finish.

Overview: The Camacho Liberty has always been a cigar that I look out for every year. The similar blends are just wonderful. The cost is a little high, but it’s a great cigar, for those special times. The slower burn was great, but it had its own drawback. Towards the end of the experience the cedar starting to get overwhelming and it made me want the tobacco flavors to come in and really take over. The crack really didn’t make much of a difference, and seldom does in this cigar. All in all, it’s a good cigar, at a decent price. But the Liberty is not something that I would put in my regular rotation due to the price, and availability. I do however love to keep a few of these on hand to satisfy those cedar cravings.
