Anyone who reads this blog knows of my love for Drew Estate’s Liga Privada lines. When word started getting out that there was an unreleased blend out there, I was all over it, and lucky for me our good friend Jonathan Drew and Drew Estate were kind enough to shoot a few of these unreleased sticks our way. Needless to say, this review, as well as any reviews on our site and completely unbiased. If a cigar rocks, it rocks, but if this new Liga Privada blows, believe me, I’ll be the first to wave red flags.

The Good Stuff: The newest, un-released blend is called the Liga Privada JD#4. The Liga Privada line was originally created for the sole purpose of Steve Saka’s (Drew Estate’s President) personal enjoyment. After massive amounts of pressure from Drew Estate’s sale staff, Saka was forced to release his personal blend, the Liga Privada No.9 to the public. The Connecticut Broadleaf used on the Liga Privada No.9 is so limited, and the No.9 was in such high demand that Drew Estate was forced to come out with yet another Liga Privada blend that they could produce year round. Hence where the Stalk Cut Habano wrapped Liga Privada T52 comes into play.

I can only assume that the success of each of these blends had caused Drew Estate’s Production Director and Saka’s partner in crime Jonathan Drew to create a Liga Privada blend of his very own. Alas, the Liga Privada JD#4 was born. I’m not entirely sure where the “#4” comes from, but I can only assume it was similar to the “No.9” and is the actually blend number assigned during tasting.

The specifics of this blend are still extremely fuzzy. The only details I have is that the blend has been around for about 2 years, and Jonathan Drew has been smoking them religiously and the release date, if it ever does get released won’t but until at least sometime next year. The blend carries the same Havana Seed Connecticut grown stalk-cut wrapper as the T52 but has a completely different core with an even more ramped up body. The samples sent to me are toros, and look to be 6 x 52/54 The ring gauge seems bigger than 52 but not quite 54.

Prelight: The Liga Privada JD#4 is hefty, toro sized cigar. The wrapper is very toothy, with a consistent dark chocolaty brown mixed with a few lighter orange shades. The JD#4 is pretty much identical in it’s physical appearance as the Liga Privada T52, with what I can assume is the same stalk-cut Habano wrapper that the T52 carries. Topped off with a nicely round double cap, the JD#4 has only one noticeable vein that I don’t foresee pestering the experience. The wrapper feels much like a softer sand-paper with no soft spots at all or any signs of mis-construction. The wrapper of the JD#4 gives off a massive cedar scent with hints of cinnamon, cocoa, and a very, very interesting almost cologne scent that I have never picked up from a Liga Privada cigar before. Whatever it is, it smells damn good. The foot gives off a totally different scent, one more composed of natural tobacco, and earth tones. In this case, the wrapper is the more dominant player. The cap clipped off with ease using my double bladed Liga Privada cutter. The cold draw producing a surprising organic, earthy, and musky flavor. Totally different than the cedar-heavy Liga Privada blends I am used to.

First Smoke: The Liga Privada JD#4 started out with the same power punch of pepper as I have grown to expect from the Liga Privada lines. Caught off guard yet again is the fact that the most prominent flavor is actually the cedar that I didn’t think came through much in the cold draw. Other strong notes are organic tobacco and cocoa mixed in with hints of spice, cinnamon, and even a tiny bit of citrus off the aftertaste. The JD#4 is really starting off with a bang, if the body stays as strong as it is right now this cigar just might knock me on my ass. The draw is effortless and pumps out a massive amount of extremely thick, dark brown, cedar scented smoke as well as a crap load of stationary smoke. You can actually see the oils burning off the wrapper. I really don’t think the scent of the smoke will bother anyone that doesn’t smoke cigars, but the amount of smoke just might. The burnline is perfect, sharp, and even and the ash left behind is a medium grey, and tightly packed with only slight flakes. The ash held on for a little over an inch before tumbling into my ashtray.

Halfway There: Wow, the strength of this cigar is already starting to hit me. The best part about it though, is its very balance with the flavor, smoothness, and creamy experience of this cigar. I think there are a lot of blends out right now that are just boasting power but lack in the flavor department, luckily up till now the JD#4 isn’t a casualty of this trend. The dominant flavor is still cedar but I am starting to get a sharp raisin, cocoa and coffee mixture in there as well as strong tobacco. The retrohale primed my nasal passage with a very enjoyable bold cedar. The burnline is still rockin’ sharp and perfectly even.

Finish: Well into the final third of this Liga Privada JD#4 and the flavors had an interesting switch up. The cedar began to fade just slightly enough to product a very creamy mocha flavor backed up by raisin, leather, tobacco, and even a slight return of spice. Then, within the last inch the cedar ramped the hell up and came on full force. Usually I’m not one for the final inch of a cigar. But the JD#4 kicked ass with a completely smooth experience with no harsh build up. Well into the last inch and my fingers didn’t even get warm which I didn’t expect with a cigar with such a huge draw. The strength? Dead on. I would compare it to something like the Oliva Serie V just without all the harsh Ligero. I’m sure there is some in here, but it takes the backburner to the flavor. After all was said and done, the JD#4 took about 2 hours to smoke.

Overview: The Liga Privada JD#4 is something quite different than the T52 and the No. 9 but still holds true to the rest of the Liga Privada line. As if the other twp blends didn’t already have enough strength the JD#4 comes in with a perfectly balanced powerhoused flavor bomb. This isn’t a beginner’s cigar. The body is too ramped up for a novice, or even an experienced medium bodied smoker. But I think it goes without saying that Drew Estate has another winner on it’s hands. I still think the No.9 trumps both the JD#4 and the T52, but the JD#4 is right up there with the T52. From what I have seen the reviews are torn between which one is favorited, and I am sure that the JD#4 will be adding another strong contender to the competition.

Pairing: I decided to pair this cigar with a cup of sweet tea. See the picture? That’s cause I didn’t post one. We all know what tea looks like. Not to mention I really don’t want to do the dishes so I drank out of a plastic cup that wasn’t very photogenic. Sweet tea is probably one of my absolute favorite pairings for a cigar. The brisk tea notes really help pick apart the tobacco while the sugar helps calm the nicotine kick produced by stronger cigars. The Liga Privada JD#4 would pair perfect with any strong whiskey or scotch, port, stout, porter, or coffee.

This cigar came to me as part of a sampler pack at a recent herf. I’ve had a few Gran Habano cigars before but never reviewed one. Overall I’ve had good experiences with them. Gran Habano is made by the very experienced hands of Guillermo Rico, a third-generation premium cigar maker who’s leafs have touched the lines of Oliva and many premium leaf brokers in Tampa’s Ybor City. Guillermo operates out of Honduras and runs a successful business under the name of GR Tabaqueras Unida. The Gran Habano line long-filler and hand-made Honduran cigars began in 2003 with 5 cigars, the Corojo #5 being one of them. If you would like to read more about the Gran Habano line, Guillermo Rico, or GR Tabaqueras Unida, head over to www.ghcigars.com

Gran Habano Corojo #5

The Corojo #5 line is Gran Habano’s strongest blend with its rich and complex wrapper. This line is available in a variety of sizes ranging from Churchill down to Lunch Break (Petite Corona) with 8 other sizes in between. All offer a strong cigar full of flavor and spice. I found the Lunch Break to be a good intro to this line since the smaller vitola allowed the flavors of the wrapper to really shine through. It is also a great price point for an everyday full strength cigar.

Cigar: Gran Habano Corojo #5
Drink: King Brewery Dark Lager
Vitola: Lunch Break (Petite Corona) (4 x 40)
Wrapper: Nicaragua Habano
Binder: Nicaragua Habano
Filler: Nicaragua, Mexico, and Costa Rica
Price: $2.40
Burn Time: 1.5 hours

Construction:
•	Nice and even diameter throughout
•	Wrapper is dark brown with a slightly oily sheen to it
•	Clean triple cap with a small pigtail
•	Foot looks moderately packed
•	Slightly soft but even firmness throughout with a quick spring back
•	Some medium veins but none that look problematic
•	Clean and easy cut
•	Draw is perfect right off the start

Gran Habano Corojo #5

Burn:
•	Toasting was a little uneven at first but straightened itself out
•	Burn started off nice and even but started to canoe within a half-inch
•	Began to fix itself soon after, I let it try before attempting to correct it
•	Cigar made an awesome recovery and is back on track
•	Burn was a little wavy throughout but usually corrected itself with a couple minor touch-ups here and there
•	Felt like the cigar was rushing me a bit, had to give it a little extra attention
•	Cigar went out once near the end but re-lit easily with no harshness

Gran Habano Corojo #5

Smoke & Ash:
•	Tons of smoke off this little cigar
•	Not too much resting smoke
•	Ash is light gray but fairly weak
•	Lots of flaking happening
•	Although flaky and weak looking, ash held on past 1.5inches

Gran Habano Corojo #5

Tasting Notes:
•	Wrapper smells slightly woodsy with a definite peppery spice
•	Foot has the same woodsy aroma but much less spice to it
•	Lots of pepper on the lips is evident right away
•	Pre-light draw is mostly woodsy flavors with a bit of pepper
•	Initial draws are earthy, woodsy and a bit of peppery spice
•	Leaving a bit of dryness on the back of my throat
•	Retrohale is surprisingly mild so far and smooth, just woodsy/cedar like flavors
•	About two inches in, flavor hasn’t changed much but it has balanced out. The cedar came through and the spice took a backseat, although still there.
•	Around the halfway mark I started tasting a toasted bread type of flavor
•	Body has been mostly medium through the cigar
•	Past the halfway mark, the retrohale started to get some bite to it, but still smooth
•	As I burn through the last two inches, the peppery flavor has come back strong and is paired mainly with leathery type of flavor
•	Body has ramped up to full at this point as well

Gran Habano Corojo #5

Final Thoughts:
Minus the few burn problems this was a great little cigar, especially considering the amazing price point. It offered a full bodied smoke with lots of flavor and spice to it. The variety of vitolas available will also satisfy any cigar enthusiast allowing them to choose their favorite. It surprised me that such a full bodied and inexpensive smoke had no harshness right down to the nub, even after re-lighting. The length of the burn time was also quite good for this vitola, coming in at 1.5 hours. The name might be a little misleading, I don’t get 1.5 hour lunch breaks! haha! I wouldn’t recommend this to novice cigar smokers as the body may be a little strong but would work very well as a mid-day or late day smoke for the veteran smoker. Definitely give this cigar a try, the peppery notes are not my favorite flavor profile but I did enjoy this particular blend as it wasn’t over powering and will be picking up more very soon. If you are also not a fan of peppery cigars, try a slightly larger ring guage which might bring the body down a bit.

Pairings:
The beer I paired this with is a straight up Dark Lager, there’s nothing special to it and no flavors to it other than the normal malt/hop. It’s a decent no frills dark ale and fairly cheap. It’s also brewed very close to my house, about a 10min drive away and the only real local brewery to me. So although not my favorite dark beer, I like to support my local businesses and there’s something appealing to it’s straight forward flavoring at times. A dark beer paired fairly well with this cigar, some other choices for me would have been tawny port or scotch/cognac. They would have been even better matches to the body and flavor or this cigar. Some strong coffee or sweet tea could have also made a good match.

The Man O War line is the brain child of the Cuban born Abdel “AJ” Fernandez. AJ is now living in Nicaragua but used to work under the supervision of Cuban cigar master, Alejandro Robaina. After moving to Nicaragua, AJ began making his own line of cigars as well as blending for other companies. Some of the names that have hs touch on them include Padilla, Rocky Patel, Diesel, Sol Cubano, Nica Libre, La Herencia Cubana and many others.

The Cuban-seed long filler of this cigar matched with the aged Habano wrapper offers a delicate balance of complexity and boldness to challenge your palate. The wrapper is aged a minimum of three years and is taken from the ‘viso’ of the tobacco plant, the middle section which offers the richest and oiliest consistencies.

Man O' War

The Man O War line comes in a total of 5 sizes, Corona, Double Corona, Robusto, Toro, and the size being reviewed now, the Torpedo. The wrapper in particular caught my eye with the Spartan style face mask and swords. I was a big fan of the movie 300 and the band reminded me of that movie. Will this cigar live up to something King Leonidas would smoke? Let’s find out…

Cigar: Man O War (Original Blend)
Drink: Grahams 2003 Late Bottled Vintage Tawny Port
Vitola: Torpedo (6.5 x 52)
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Price: Gift by @cigarsthomas (About $8-$10 online)
Burn Time: 1.75 Hours

Man O' War

Construction:
•	Evenly constructed all around
•	No major veins
•	Clean tapered triple cap
•	Nice medium brown colored wrapper, no oiliness to it
•	Foot looks well packed
•	Mostly even firmness with a slight spring, a small part near the foot is quite hard
•	Wrapper near foot of cigar got a little damage from transit
•	Cut was very clean and easy
•	Draw is good but could be a bit tighter
•	A half inch crack formed near the head after the halfway mark

Man O' War

Burn:
•	Toasting was slow and even without problems
•	Initial burn has been a bit wavy but considering the damage on the foot it is burning quite well
•	Burn is still wavy approaching the end, it has corrected itself of any problems without any help
•	Staying lit without the need for extra draws
•	Went out twice in the last inch or so and got really harsh so I set it to rest a bit early

Man O' War

Smoke & Ash:
•	Good mouthful of smoke on each draw
•	Moderate amount of resting smoke giving off a nice cedar aroma
•	Medium gray ash
•	Not much flaking and seems very strong
•	Ash fell off at about 1 inch most times

Man O' War

Tasting Notes:
•	Wrapper has a slightly earthy aroma to it, very light
•	Foot is earthy and woody with a hint of nutmeg
•	Pre-light draw has strong cedar notes with hints of nutmeg and a little bit of spice
•	Initial draws taste of cedar mostly with an earthy finish
•	Retrohale is fairly mild with a light cedar finish
•	About an inch in I’m starting to get a slightly peppery after-taste
•	Body has been in the mild-medium range
•	Nearing half-way mark, the cedar and earthy notes have calmed down and the peppery flavors are coming through
•	Some leathery and light coffee notes also creeping in
•	Retrohale has some bite to it now past the halfway mark, leathery flavor on the finish
•	Most flavors have been replaced by leather and spice as I get into the last two inches
•	Some harshness creeping in around the last inch

Man O' War

Final Thoughts:
This was a good cigar, had a variety of flavors and a bit of dimension to it. I didn’t find it to be as complex as it claimed and not as strong as I expected either. When you take price into consideration my opinion of the cigar declines a bit. I didn’t find this to be a $10 cigar, or probably more in some states depending on taxes. I think there are better cigars in this price range. If I can find these for a good price I’d probably pick up a few and would recommend the same to anyone else.

Man O' War

Pairings:
As you may know from reading some of my reviews, LBV Tawny Port is one of my favorite pairings. It matches better with some cigars than with others but I think it was a great match for this cigar in particular. The reason is that the spiciness and boldness of the cigar went perfectly with the full-bodied sweetness of the port. Other pairings that should go perfectly would be sweet tea, scotch, cognac or diet soda. Look for something that will slightly counter-balance the peppery notes. Anything too mild may get drowned out by the cigars flavors.

Man O' War

Construction:
•	Evenly round and smooth throughout
•	Consistent light spring from foot to head
•	Foot is well packed
•	Cleanly applied triple cap
•	Wrapper is medium brown in color
•	Draw is just a bit tight, but nothing too distracting
•	Cut evenly and cleanly
•	Draw opened up to a perfect resistance around the halfway mark

Burn:
•	Toasting was fairly even with a small dark spot that was fixed with a light exhale on the foot
•	Burn is slightly wavy and going nice and slow
•	After the ash fell off the burn got a lot straighter
•	As the draw opened up the cigar started burning faster
•	No extra effort or babysitting needed with this cigar, staying lit easily

Smoke & Ash:
•	Producing a medium amount of smoke
•	Resting smoke is about normal, giving off a great woodsy/tobacco aroma
•	Ash is going a little crooked but still strong and no flaking
•	Ash held on until just over 2 inches, barely missed the ashtray…
•	The ash past the halfway point has been a little weaker and more flaky, fell off after an inch

Tasting Notes:
•	Pre-light aroma on wrapper is a bit spicy but no prominent notes
•	Foot has a light aroma of sweet tobacco
•	Pre-light draw was more barnyard/hay type of aroma and sweet tobacco
•	Initial draws are of leather toasted cedar with a mild spice to top it off
•	Retrohale is mild and smooth with some nice woodsy notes
•	The flavors have become more balanced about an inch in and a lot more enjoyable. Pairing perfectly with this wine
•	At about the halfway point I’m picking up a unique sweet flavor, the closest I can compare it too is pure honey or maple syrup, the really dark potent kind. Very enjoyable
•	After halfway the retrohale now has some bite and the body has ramped up to a medium
•	Getting into the last 2 inches, the woodsy flavor is gone and I’m left mostly with the leather and spice, the rich sweetness comes and goes
•	Throughout most of the cigar, it’s been leaving a dryness in the back of my throat, a little extra wine may be needed when you light one of these up
•	A little bitterness crept in with about an inch left, nothing over powering and still enjoying the flavors

The final of 5 Garo Habano reviews has arrived, and we’re finishing it off with the Churchill sized Los Lectores. The Garo Habano website claims this cigar to be their throwback to the times of Cuban cigars with complexity and strength. The Ligero filler promises to make this cigar a spicy one and likely full bodied. To say the least, this cigar combines the products of 3 different countries. The description sounded interesting and enticing as I read it before lighting up this cigar.

Garo Habano Los Lectores

The Los Lectores comes in 6 sizes:

Robusto “G” (6.25×54), “R” Robusto (4.75×52), “T” Torpedo (6.5×52), Churchill (7.48), DC (7.5×54) and Salomon (7×58)

You can notice that all the sizes are fairly large ring gauges and as mentioned, the one up for review today is the Churchill. I was hoping to end this string of reviews on a high note but unfortunately this cigar was not the shining star of the bunch. I’m lighting this up on a sunny day and hoping to settle in for a long enjoyable smoke…

Cigar: Garo Habano Los Lectores
Drink: Diet Dr. Pepper
Vitola: Churchill (7×48)
Wrapper: Nicaragua
Binder: Indonesian
Filler: Ligero Cubano / Seco Piloto
Price: $8.00 from Garo Habano Website
Burn Time: ??? Did not fully burn either sample

Construction:
•	Fairly even and round throughout, one sample had a very soft 2 inch spot near the foot
•	Light brown colored wrapper
•	No major veins
•	Small crack in wrapper just above the band, nothing major
•	Messy triple cap
•	Tightly packed foot but there is one small hole, hope it doesn’t cause any tunneling
•	Fairly soft when squeezed throughout
•	Draw is a very open
•	Draw improved about half-way through

Burn:
•	Messy at the start, the wrapper is bubbling just past the burn and is quite wavy
•	Needing extra attention to stay lit near the first couple inches
•	Lots of canoeing that needed attention
•	Cigar went out just past halfway point and needed re-lighting
•	After going out twice more and cutting it once I tossed the stick with over 2 inches left
•	Also tossed the second sample early due to more burn problems

Garo Habano Los Lectores

Smoke & Ash:
•	Moderate amount of smoke
•	Seems to dissipate pretty quickly
•	Moderate resting smoke
•	Ash is Very flaky
•	Medium grey colored ash, very weak, falling off in my lap a lot
•	Ash never passed an inch

Tasting Notes:
•	Wrapper and foot both have a barnyard/hay aroma
•	Pre-light draw left a strong peppery flavor on lips and tongue, with an added hay flavor
•	Initial draws offered none of the pepper I was expecting from the pre-light draw, mostly just a simple tobacco flavor and some burning wood taste
•	Retrohale is very mild and smooth with a short finish, again just tobacco flavor so far
•	The burning wood flavor turned to a woodsy/cedar flavor
•	Flavors went very bitter after the re-light, let’s hope they come back
•	Flavors came back after about 6 or 7 draws
•	More relights and nothing but bitterness, nowhere near enjoyable anymore
•	Even before relights the flavors were very bland and boring

Final Thoughts:
This was a disappointing cigar. The other Garo’s may have been one dimensional but they did have decent flavor. This particular cigar suffered from multiple flaws in flavor, burn, draw and construction. I’d be curious to hear if anyone else has tried one of these and if they had the same problems I did. Perhaps a smaller Vitola would do away with some of the problems I experienced?

Pairings:
I can’t suggest a great pairing for this cigar simply because of the problems I encountered. If I had to go by what the website says, the Ligero would likely need a good strong pairing like coffee or scotch to be well balanced.

Another notch in the Garo Habano belt today with the Maduro. You can read more about Garo Habano on their website (www.garohabano.com) and also take a look at the other reviews of this line on the site. The Maduro line comes in 4 Vitolas all in the 50+ Ring Gauge range and are all named after the various voices in a choir:

Baritone (4.5×52) – Tenor (5.5×52) – Alto (6×50) – Soprano (6.5×52)

Garo Habano Maduro

Out of the Garo Habanos I’ve reviewed so far, this one had the most interesting flavor profile but was not the best in the burn department. I found that the description on their website was a little misleading, claiming the cigar to be full bodied when it never really passed the medium range for me. It also suggest a pairing with Cognac but I wouldn’t recommend that, check the pairing section at the bottom of the review. The notes mentioned on the site about the wonderful aroma and cocoa flavors are spot on. Read on to find out more about the cigar.

Garo Habano Maduro

Filler: Piloto Cubano
Price: $5.40 from the Garo Habano website
Burn Time: 2 hours

Construction:
•	Very bumpy wrapper with two large veins
•	A nice dark brown color but no oily sheen which I see on most Maduro’s
•	Slightly messy triple cap
•	Slightly springy and even firmness throughout
•	Very open draw…

Burn:
•	Very bad start, started to canoe, gave it an inch to fix itself but never did. Needed a major touch up
•	After touch up, the burn was still wavy
•	Another canoe at the halfway point but it fixed itself
•	Big tunnel right at the band that caused the cigar to go out and needed a re-light
•	More tunneling problems as I smoke through the last few inches, also having problems keeping it lit
•	Needed another relight about 1.5 inches from the end
•	Tunnels/Canoes seemed to affect both my samples, one of them had a hard time staying lit because of it

Garo Habano Maduro

Smoke:
•	Medium mouthful of smoke
•	Good amount of resting smoke that gives off a nice aroma of smoky coffee

Ash:
•	Very flaky
•	The massive amount of flaking makes it very weak and little pieces of ash are falling off all over me
•	Light grey in color

Tasting Notes:
•	Dry aroma on the wrapper is sweet coca
•	More sweet cocoa on the foot with an added hint of coffee
•	Initial draws are strong notes of coffee and a hint of bitter cocoa
•	The bitter cocoa flavors got stronger when I reached the band, leaving a nice finish on the palate
•	The body started off mild and has approached the medium range near the end
•	Retrohale throughout the cigar has been sweet tobacco with a small bite and short finish
•	Harsh bitterness creeping in after the last relight

Garo Habano Maduro

Final Thoughts:
The flavors on this cigar were quite enjoyable and the body and flavors kept getting better as the cigar burned. The burn issues were the main down side of this cigar and negatively affected the flavor. This was a good cigar and is comparative to some in the same price range. If it didn’t suffer from the burn issues I’d probably purchase a few more. I may give it another chance with the hopes that a different batch could have some better results.

Pairing Suggestions:
This cigar was a good pairing with the Mill Street coffee porter I had. It’s a light porter with mild flavors. I wouldn’t opt for anything strong or overly flavored since the cigar has plenty of flavors to offer. A good option would be a similarly light beer, a diet soda, water or a light red wine like Beaujolais. I would personally stay away from stronger drinks like scotch or cognac since this is a lighter cigar.
My next Garo Habano up for review is the Centum. Out of all the samples we received this one was the most visually appealing to me because of the wonderful color on the wrapper and the antique looking band. The way the text is written sort of reminded me of an old carnival type of advertisement. This interesting cigar comes in 5 sizes all using classic names and sizes:

Robusto (4.75×52), Corona (5.5×42), Toro (6.52), Churchill (7×48), and Salomon (7.5×58)

You can read a little bit more about the Garo Habano Centum by visiting their website at www.garohabano.com. The cigar comes wrapped with an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper. I was excited to try this one out since I’ve had some great smokes that have wrappers from Ecuador. The description on the site also had some nice notes in it like toast, cocoa and espresso.

I’ve added a new section at the bottom of this review for pairings. Let me know what you all think of that little section at the bottom. If I get good feedback I’ll keep adding it to my reviews to help give you all some suggestions on what to pair the cigars with.

Garo Habano Centum

Filler: Nicaraguan
Price: $6.00/stick from the Garo Habano Website
Burn Time: 1.25 Hours

Construction:
•	Very nice orange and cream colored band, almost antique looking with lots of little detail
•	Very appealing medium brown and oily wrapper
•	Two large veins running down the sides that will likely cause burn issues
•	Cleanly applied double cap
•	Foot has some holes in it and some of the filler appears to be very dark brown, almost black in color
•	The bit of dark filler was also under the cap after cutting
•	Consistent firmness throughout with a bit of spring to it
•	Pre-light draw was very open on one sample, others were just right
•	Lots of glue under the band and it caused a small tear in the wrapper, didn’t cause any major problems though

Garo Habano Centum

Burn:
•	Toasting was difficult, center filler wouldn’t catch and wrapper started burning early, causing some burn issues right off the start
•	Open draw causing resulted in a quick burn on one stick
•	Slightly wavy burn line throughout
•	One major correction required at the halfway point
•	Staying lit easily, doesn’t need extra attention

Smoke:
•	Big mouthful of smoke
•	Very light resting smoke

Ash:
•	Light grey in color
•	A bit of flaking
•	Held on for over 1.5 inches

Garo Habano Centum

Tasting Notes:
•	Dry aroma has a light barnyard scent and a hint of pepper
•	Pre-light draw was more barnyard scent and some spiciness on the lips
•	Initial draws are earthy and woodsy
•	Lots of spice on the retrohale, short finish
•	Body starting off in the mild-medium range
•	About an inch in, the woodsy notes changed to a burning wood flavor, I personally really enjoy this flavor, reminds me of a camp fire
•	Although the flavors are consistent and smooth, they haven’t changed and I’m passed the halfway point
•	Some bitterness crept in with about 2 inches left

Final Thoughts:
The tasting notes on the website promise a variety of flavors (espresso, toast, cocoa) and complexity that I did not pick up in this cigar, the flavor was pretty straight forward. As with all my Garo’s so far, the flavors have been quite enjoyable. The downside is that they never change throughout the cigar. Let me be clear that this is not necessarily a bad thing. It is just a preference of mine to have some dimension to a cigar. The body never passed medium and it wasn’t overly complex, which makes this a good early day or beginner’s cigar.

Pairing Suggestions:
I paired this with some Tawny port and thought it made an ‘okay’ match. The flavors in a port are usually quite strong and sometimes very sweet and I find they match better with a full bodied cigar. The Habano wrapper made me think this was going to have a little more body than it did. A good red wine such as a merlot, or a dark porter/stout would make an excellent pairing. Light beers would not mix well. For non-alcoholic pairings, I’d suggest a diet soda.

In today’s review we take a look at Garo Habano Fine Cigar’s second sample that was sent to us, the Aniversario X. The website (www.garohabano.com) doesn’t talk much about the reasoning behind the name but it’s probably safe to assume that it was released to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Garo Habano which has been around since 1996. The Aniversario X comes in 4 sizes and all are very large: Belicoso (6.25×54), Robusto “G” (6.25×54), Salomon (7×58) and Garo “A” (8×48). The description of this cigar claims this it is full bodied and offers a complexity comparable to the Havana cigars of the 50′s and 60′s. This is a bold claim and set up some high expectations for this cigar.

Garo Habano Aniversario X

I had high hopes for this cigar since it had the highest price point of the 5 samples sent to us and the Sun Grown Corojo wrapper with some Ligero filler sounded like a tasty and strong cigar. Unfortunately, my samples were plagued with wrapper issues and the body barely passed medium. The flavors were very enjoyable but didn’t change throughout the cigar. Once again, I’m braving the cold Canadian climate with the help of my propane heater to bring this review to our loyal readers.

Cigar: Garo Habano Aniversario X
Drink: Chateauneuf Du Pape French wine
Vitola: Bellicoso (6.25 x 54)
Wrapper: Sun-Grown Corojo
Binder: Indonesian
Filler: Seco Cubano/Lijero Peru, Nicaragua, Criollo 98 & Cubano
Price: $8.40 from the Garo Habano web site
Burn Time: 2 – 2.25 Hours

Construction:
• Light Brown in color
• Slightly tapered head, not quite a typical Belicoso
• Small curly tail finish on top of a triple cap
• 2 prominent veins but not large enough to cause problems
• Tightly packed foot
• Good consistent firmness with a slight spring throughout
• On one sample, tight draw after two cuts, didn’t want to cut any further
• Still needed a third cut after lighting, past the tapered head now so it’s design seems kinds wasted, draw still tight but manageable
• Other samples had good draw
• At about halfway the wrapper split from the cap to the band in a straight and deep line, ruined the draw even more (see picture)
• Cigar kept expanding so the wrapper was barely burning
• Another sample split near the foot just after lighting…

Burn:
• Toasting was nice and even
• The bad draw sample felt like it was going out so I had to give it a lot of extra draws
• Burn is a little wavy but no touch ups needed through the first half
• The sample that didn’t split at the end never needed any corrections until I put it down

Smoke:
• Good amount of smoke
• Slight resting smoke that is nicely aromatic

Ash:
• Very nice light grey/white ash
• Ash is tight with no flaking
• Strong ash stuck on for about 1.5inches before I knocked it off

Tasting Notes:
• Not much aroma on the wrapper, just a slight hay/barnyard scent
• Foot has a stronger barnyard aroma and a bit of spice on the nose
• Very spicy on the lips after cutting
• Initial retrohale has a bite of spiciness that lingers
• Initial puffs are woodsy and earthy, very smooth with a great finish
• I was expecting this to be a strong smoke but it’s been consistently mild-medium bodied
• Approaching the halfway point and no flavor changes. They are good flavors but a little change would be nice
• As the wrapper expanded and stopped burning the flavors disappeared and was left with just bitter tobacco, was enjoying it until that happened…
• The sample that I was able to smoke to the nub was good to the end with only some minor bitterness

Final Thoughts:
• On the sample with the tight draw, the extra draws it needed made me feel like I was smoking it fast and I usually like to take it slow. Took away from my enjoyment of this cigar
• The flavors were tasty and very smooth but never changed. Some people may like a good consistent cigar but I prefer a little more dimension
• Cracking/exploding wrappers plagued all my samples
• The flavors were good and worth trying but they didn’t jump out at me. If they would have developed a bit or added a bit of complexity this would have been an excellent smoke minue the construction issues…

Our friends over at Garo Habano Fine Cigars sent us a few of their cigars to be reviewed. Over my next few reviews I will be evaluating the samples they sent us. You can read more about Garo Habano Fine Cigars by visiting their website at www.garohabano.com. Garo Habano was established in 1996 by Dr. Garo Bouldoukian and currently has 6 varieties in multiple vitolas. I have personally not had any exposure to this brand prior to receiving these samples and feel that this will make my reviews as unbiased as possible.

The first one I decided to light up was the Garo Blue. This seems to the mildest of their line and thought it would be a good starting point. Here is a short description of this cigar from their website:

“With mild bodied flavor and wrapped in a golden brown Connecticut shaded wrapper, Garo Blue smokes smoothly and maintains the same consistency through and through. Delicious flavors of nuts culminate in a lingering ceder-like light finish. The solid ash refuses to fall off from this hand crafted masterpiece. It is an excellent addition to your humidor collection.”

I am sitting down to enjoy this cigar on a Sunny Canadian morning in my backyard, the weather is just a bit below freezing and I have my propane heater keeping me warm.

Cigar: Garo Habano Blue
Drink: Diet Coke
Vitola: Robusto (4.75×52)
Wrapper: Connecticut
Binder: Olor Dominican
Filler: Piloto Cubano
Price: $5.68
Burn Time: 1.5 Hours

Construction:
• Soft feel throughout with minor springiness
• Wrapper is a nice light brown in color
• Cleanly applied single cap
• Foot seems lightly packed, still some room left
• Open to Moderate draw on my samples, one was very open

Burn:
• Burn is going very fast at the start
• Slight waviness at the start required a minor touchup
• No problems after initial touch up
• Stayed lit surprisingly well considering how soft it felt
• Burn slowed down a bit as the draw improved about halfway through

Smoke:
• Moderate amount of smoke
• There’s a fair bit of resting smoke
• Not much aroma coming off the resting smoke
• The smoke coming off the foot had a blue tinge to it but the smoke coming from the cap was a normal blue color

Ash:
• Light gray
• Tiny bit of flaking, nothing major
• Strong ash, held on past 1.5 inches

Tasting Notes:
• Dry aroma is light and earthy
• Light spiciness on the lips
• Initial draws are earthy and nutty
• Mild bodied
• Retrohale is mild with a touch of spice and a nice cedar finish
• Slight cedar flavor developed near the last 2 inches
• Slight bitterness in last inch, fixed mostly after a little purge
• Consistent flavor through most of the cigar

Final Thoughts:
• Good as an early morning or lunch smoke
• Great to give to a friend interested in trying cigars for the first time
• Flavor was enjoyable but never changed, I wouldn’t opt for the larger vitolas but this can make a good go-to smoke in the smaller sizes
• Would pair great with almost anything, coffee, soda, water or a light beer
• The price is a little high when compared to similar mild Connecticut cigars but still a good smoke

Cain Straight Ligero Habano

Being that I am new to cigar reviews, I spend a lot of time reading other sites and blogs. One name stood out as of late and its all over the internet. The Cain Straight Ligero is all over twitter, blogs, review sites, and even the buzz in local stores. Needless to say I jumped at the first chance to get my hands on one of these bad boys that I could, getting a pre-release kit courtesy of Sam Leccia himself. He was kind enough to send a few of these out before release to cigar reviewers all over the Internet.

The Cain line of cigars (at this point I believe is is just a habano, and a maduro) are the newest release from the nimble hands of Sam Leccia, maker of the famous NUb cigar line. The Cain will be announced to the world at this year’s International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Event that took place this past week in New Orleans and is by far one of the most anticipated cigars to make face in this years event.

Cain Straight Ligero

The Good Stuff: The Cain Straight Ligero cigar is, as obvious of its name, a ligero based cigar. Ligero tobacco is the absolute top leaves from the tobacco plant. These leaves are not only said to be the strongest of the entire plant due to the excessive amount of sun they absorb, but the most flavorful as well. Taking it one step further has always been a trend when it comes to Sam, and the Cain in no doubt withholds that tradition with its triple fermentation process. Easily said, the ligero tobacco leaves are fermented three different times, producing massive amounts of heat withdrawing the strongest, and most flavorful tobacco possible while at the same time producing the longest burning tobacco. Although the Cain states “straight Ligero” the tobacco in this cigar are blended with Seco tobacco to produce a true burn.

Cain Straight Ligero

Size: 5×50 - Wrapper: Ligero Habano - Filler/Binder: Ligero - Origin: Esteli, Nicaragua

Prelight: The Cain I happened to receive was a Belicoso (torpedo) habano. Which is actually my favorite shape. The construction of this cigar is magnificent. Absolutely no flaws, or soft spots. When I recieved my package UPS did a good job banging the hell out of the box, so I wasn’t sure what condition the contents would be in. The Cain Habano boasts a very dark, very smooth, chocolaty brown wrapper. This actually threw me off, and for a while I thought I actually had received the maduro. From what I hear I’m not the only one who made that mistake. There were very little veins. The banding itself is remarkably simple. A black and gold band, stating the words Cain Straight Ligero is soft script; the perfect touch, the Cain speaks for itself.

First Smoke: As a trend in most traditional cigars I have had recently the Cain Habano took quite some time to get lit under the gun of my single flame colibri butane torch. The first tastes were that of a woodsy cedar arrangement, followed shortly by sharp pepper spice. The Cain’s spice was incredibly strong and flavorful, and at times actually tickled the back of my throat while the strength of the tobacco made my eyes water. The draw was decent sized, and very thick. It wasn’t wrapped too tight, just tight enough not to let the immense taste over-power the smoker. The Cain, even in its beginning stages, has to be by far the strong cigar I have ever smoked. The scent of the Cain was well-paired with its cedaresque smells, mixed with that of leather and spice. The ash built up for well over an inch before giving way.

Cain Straight Ligero

Halfway There: I am so taken by the strength of the Cain, and the length of the burn. I can’t believe I have been going at this cigar for over an hour an I am barely reaching the halfway point. I’m not babysitting this guy either, I am hitting the hell out of it and the remarkably smooth smoke, with the great flavor is allowing me to do so. The taste is still hanging in there, and has yet to change, or decrease. The strength of the Cain has increased a bit by this point, while the burn is INCREDIBLY perfectly even.

Finish: When all was said and done the Cain Habano took me little over two and a half hours to smoke down to the nub. Again, I was going at this cigar like a champ. I am so blown away at the consistency in burn, flavor, and strength. Even towards the very end of this cigar, it was still a very smooth, enjoyable smoke. I took this down and one sitting, needless to say I was a bit light-headed and disoriented when I stood up for the first time.

Cain Straight Ligero

Overview: The Cain is one hell of a cigar, and anyone who has had one should be privileged. Because of the strength, and flavor, I wouldn’t recommend this cigar to any novice smoker, or those with weak stomachs. But anyone who has ever enjoyed a few good, stronger cigars this one’s for you. I would buy this again, and plan to do so in the very near future.
