Jameson Cigars Declaration Iniquity – First Video Review!

By  |

This is the first video review up on Casas Fumando! The cigar of choice to delve into the video world was a Jameson Cigars Declaration Iniquity. In the video I talk about the company, the pairings, the cigar, and of course my opinion. It is my first video review so be patient, I’ll improve them as they go. Please send me any feedback you think can help improve the video. Runtime is about 16min.
I’ve attached my quick point form notes at the bottom here in case you don’t have time for the video.
Also don’t forget that we have our contest running (Read the post here). So read the rules and make sure to comment! Hope you enjoy the video!

Cigar: Jameson Cigars Declaration Iniquity
Drink: 2007 Vineland Estates Cabernet Merlot
Vitola: Iniquity (5.5 x 50)
Wrapper: Habano ’98
Binder: Criollo ’98
Filler: Dominican Republic
Price: $5.90 ($29.50/5pk) direct form www.jamesoncigars.com
Burn Time: 1.5 Hours

Construction:
• Evenly round and smooth throughout
• Consistent light spring from foot to head
• Foot is well packed
• Cleanly applied triple cap
• Wrapper is medium brown in color
• Draw is just a bit tight, but nothing too distracting
• Cut evenly and cleanly
• Draw opened up to a perfect resistance around the halfway mark

Burn:
• Toasting was fairly even with a small dark spot that was fixed with a light exhale on the foot
• Burn is slightly wavy and going nice and slow
• After the ash fell off the burn got a lot straighter
• As the draw opened up the cigar started burning faster
• No extra effort or babysitting needed with this cigar, staying lit easily

Smoke & Ash:
• Producing a medium amount of smoke
• Resting smoke is about normal, giving off a great woodsy/tobacco aroma
• Ash is going a little crooked but still strong and no flaking
• Ash held on until just over 2 inches, barely missed the ashtray…
• The ash past the halfway point has been a little weaker and more flaky, fell off after an inch

Tasting Notes:
• Pre-light aroma on wrapper is a bit spicy but no prominent notes
• Foot has a light aroma of sweet tobacco
• Pre-light draw was more barnyard/hay type of aroma and sweet tobacco
• Initial draws are of leather toasted cedar with a mild spice to top it off
• Retrohale is mild and smooth with some nice woodsy notes
• The flavors have become more balanced about an inch in and a lot more enjoyable. Pairing perfectly with this wine
• At about the halfway point I’m picking up a unique sweet flavor, the closest I can compare it too is pure honey or maple syrup, the really dark potent kind. Very enjoyable
• After halfway the retrohale now has some bite and the body has ramped up to a medium
• Getting into the last 2 inches, the woodsy flavor is gone and I’m left mostly with the leather and spice, the rich sweetness comes and goes
• Throughout most of the cigar, it’s been leaving a dryness in the back of my throat, a little extra wine may be needed when you light one of these up
• A little bitterness crept in with about an inch left, nothing over powering and still enjoying the flavors

    Suggestions?
    1. In your notes, maybe do a section to wrap things up. I.e. the high/low points, would you recommend it, etc.
    2. Grow a mustache. That would be pretty cool I guess.

Other than that, great review Daniel. Might have to look into finding one and giving it a try

Nice review, and a wine from my old stomping grounds (or thereabouts). I like the thorough notes as well.

Great review Daniel. I love the entire Jameson line. Great job and I agree with Jordan, maybe a handlebar mustache would be sweet. 🙂

+1 on the mustache Daniel. Looks like you’re going to have to do it

A mustache eh? that’s seems so 1990! ;p; I had the full goatee with the upper lip for awhile, I hit it up here and there.

jordan, your suggestion #1, were you referring to the written notes or the end of the video?

Mark, you still live up in Canada or did you head south?

I was referring to the written notes. That way the people who don’t have time for the entire video can get a better idea of your opinion on the cigar. Your notes have bits and pieces of how you felt about it, but I think a more concise summary of your opinion at the end of the written notes would be a good touch. Just my two cents.

    Suggestions:

    1. Get a big comfy chair

    2. Grow some hair – you got some curls, you may be able to get a white afro going on =)

Very nice video review! I hope we see more.

Jordan is the reason I tend to do a full writeup with my video, well, that and Walt makes me LMAO.

Tip if you want to do a full writeup with the video:

I usually use Google Wave to do my writeup as I am doing my video. In between takes I just write up for the previous third using my notes and what I am getting from the one I am smoking. Just seems to make it go easier than writing notes then trying to do the writeup at the end.

Nice start Daniel… I have recently ordered a five pack and am looking forward to sparking them up.
Surprised so many are giving you advice on your look. Strange preoccupation.. Just keep the focus on cigars. Best of luck!

Man, I just had my first one of these, and just couldn’t keep it lit! Leaving it alone for less than a minute would allow it to go out completely. Very frustrating. After relighting for the fourth or fifth time, I had to give it up with two inches left. I hope the rest of the ones I have aren’t all going to be like this, because the flavors promised to be very nice.

Sorry to hear that jjo! I’ve had quite a few of these and never ran into any burn issues. If any more of them act that way I would send Brad Mayo an email. He’s a really nice guy and may set it straight. You can see from the video that I didn’t have any real problems with it.
I almost forgot about this video, maybe I need to make an attempt at another one sometime in the future?

I’ve had these in a 65-67% RH humidor for a little over two weeks, so I’ll give it a shot in another couple of weeks or so.

Thanks for responding so quickly, Daniel!

So I waited another six weeks, and this one is a complete turnaround. Smoking beautifully, no problems at all, with great flavors, although a bit spicier than I was anticipating. These obviously came to me overly humidified. so I would certainly buy these again.

And yeah, I think you should do another video review. Perhaps stretched out over a month so that we can see a time-lapse of your new Mo-stache! You could always edit in a shot of the clean shaven lip. You should also get Tony to join in. I know he’s camera-shy, but I’d like to see the banter between the two of you.

Glad you got to really enjoy one of these, your first experience was definitely not in line with what I’ve experienced on the Declarations!
Not sure about another video review yet, I’ve gotta sort out all my gear and figure out a good setup, haven’t had the time to do that in awhile. Maybe sometime in the future.

Be on the look out for a Movember update later this week with some interesting news…
